The first day for a long time of not riding into a headwind. The bike store in Wenzenbach fixed my gears (expensively) yesterday - needing to take apart, grease and reassemble the casette as well as fine-tune the derailleur - and the bike was again a pleasure to ride. A low-budget but nice enough hotel in Dietfurt. Several bicyclists staying - most looking overweight, red in the face and unfit (hope I don't fall under that description too). I decide to shorten my route across Germany. I find I'm not really enjoying the manicured cycle lanes laid on for us spoiled cyclists, nor the countryside of extensive fields of grain & plough, and am losing enthusiasm for visiting yet more churches . . . . Just before turning in (or intending to) in the bathroom I leant downwards to put something in the bin .... WHACK - my head collided with the corner of a glass shelf. I reeled back, bent double - and saw blood dripping freely onto the floor. I looked in the mirror - blood streamed down my face and (of course, being hopeless with blood), I couldn't bring myself to examine the gash. Half an hour and more than half a toilet roll later, the blood seemed to stop flowing. I washed my head & face in the shower, glanced briefly in the mirror to glimpse what looked like a one inch gash - and did my best to tape a disinfectant pad onto it . . . .
