On this day 125 years ago today, physicist Günszberg Dénes was born in Budapest to a Jewish family who converted to Lutheranism and later changed their surname to Gábor. He later became known as Gábor Dénes and to the rest of the world as Dennis Gabor. He studied engineering in Budapest and Berlin after World War I, particularly high voltage electric transmission lines, which led to his interest in electron optics. He fled Nazy Germany in 1933, where he was considered Jewish, and began working in Britain.
He married Marjorie Louise Butler in 1936 and became a British citizen in 1946. A year later, he invented holography, but not the kind we're familiar with. Rather, he created holographics with electrons rather than visible light, and so observable only with an electron microscope. Not until 1964 was the visual holgram created, as it requred a coherent light source, and the laser was not invented until 1960.
His later work included CRT innovations and research into human communication and hearing. In his 1963 book Inventing the Future, Gabor coined the phrase "the future cannot be predicted, but futures can be invented."
In 1971, Gabor received the Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of holography. He died in London in 1979. In 2006, a blue plaue was placed in Kensington, where he lived in 1946 through the early 1960s.
Today I needed to visit two car dealers on opposite sides of West L.A., so I planned a short ride between, with the climb to Mount Saint Mary's in between, then back to Venice. Very easy ride, other than stretches of Barrington and Sepulveda with poor bike infrastructure.
