What an adventure! I'd been wanting to hike to this cache and both Bald Mountian peaks; M had been here before, but not quite to the summit of the second peak, which is 3184, slightly less than the main peak at 3215 ft. Our eyecrometers (eye-micrometer) had guestimated both peaks to be roughtly the same. Maps tell us the rest of the story!
This was a spur of the moment/day hike; neither of us had planned to do an outing such as this. M and I both had ideas for other trips/tasks for the day (I was planning on a natural bike ride and getting tasks done around the house). M pinged me asking what I was up to, and had three suggestions. Bald Mountain, let's do it! A quick Pocket Query and setting up the pack; the lovely N pulled together my lunch, thankyouverymuch!
We met at the Pedee middle school (where the heck is that?) and took snowball up the hill. With M at the maps (he is a very capable MapeMatician (map-mathematician) who occasionally leads us astray, but that is all part of the adventure!) off we went. We parked at the gate on Bald Mountain Road, gathered our packs and lunches, and started our hike, naturally!
I had been considering this road as a possible bike/hike adventure, but after covering it on foot, I determined that this road is way out of my league as far as cycling, nor do I have the proper equipment.
We turned up the access road to the peaks; what a slog! We both kept up a good pace, breaking a sweat and me breathing a bit heavy, M being very quiet in that department. I have, after all, 16 years on him...
Once at the main peak, we admired the views and the comms equipment. Cell service is pretty good up here! (said he standing under the cell tower...). We headed back down, looking for the logs spotted earlier that would serve as our lunch table and chairs. We arranged the setup, had a scrumptious lunch, and continued to admire the views. Those noble firs up here would make fine Christmas trees!
Then off to find this geocache prize! One must pick the passage carefully; there's been significant thinning in the nobles which makes passage difficult. M had a waypoint; we took it, and after a few moments, made it out to the meadow. The walking was much easier all the way to the cache! Once there, M stood back and let me do the search as he'd found it previously (as you saw in his prior logs). He had a couple of "Warmer, cooler" suggestions, then I zeroed in on the area and started searching. It took about 5 minutes. Prize in hand! The log book and contents were slightly damp but in fine condition. Logged!
Next... We thought we could add to the adventure and head north over the hill to find the other access road toward the parking wpt associated with this cache. Unfortunately, the hill got steep and we kept veering left. We never got closer than a quarter mile but did get into a very sketchy steep hillside, so much so that I finally persuaded M to start heading along the hillside and gently back up and toward the meadow. After three prompts (right, M?), he agreed. We made it back to the meadow, safe and sound Then across the meadow, and back the way we came.
The hike was nearly 7 miles and a whole lotta fun!
