Going forward, I’m going to have to record these rides in their entirety. Piloting the trishaws is very strenuous even with the e-assist. After this latest outing, I was ready for the ICU!
I met James Watson and a new pilot, Nora, at the Hermosa Church at 110th and 5th at 3:15 to discover that only two trishaws were operational, the third having succumbed to a torn tire. James was suggesting that Nora and I go it alone. Not at all enthusiastic about that idea, I suggested that he ride along as a passenger. At that point, he revealed one of the coolest bikes I’d ever seen - a 20” foldable bike converted to a FIXIE! He offered to ride along as our guide.
Piloting for three hours or more, handling a conveyance that probably masses in excess of 400 pounds, is proving to be a truly strenuous workout and these outings deserve the same recognition as others. The torrid summer weather also adds to the challenge. Getting to the church, riding the sweltering, slow tram, waiting on an equally withering subway platform, and then schlepping crosstown to Hermosa is hard enough. Then piloting for several hours on top of that makes it even more arduous. The commute back to Roosevelt Island adds that last bit of disabling effort.
The weather, while an improvement over Tuesday's, was still very challenging. Under partly cloudy skies, temps pushing 90, and dewpoints in the low 70s once again, what little westerly winds there were provided scant relieve from the torrid conditions.
Other issues included James Watson's questionable judgement. Look, I really like this guy and have an awful lot in common with him whether it be bikes or politics. He also gives considerable time to the trishaw project. But taking us on the pot-hole ridden, gravel jogging path was clearly an act of unbridled lunacy! The end of that segment almost ended badly when I hit a pothole which pitched the entire conveyance forward, almost depositing India, her mother Margaret, and me on the ground!! Somehow, I was able to stop the forward tipping and stabilized the trishaw.
After all of that, Chris had scheduled another ride at the senior center on 102nd and 2nd. We picked up two high-schoolers who were going to do some practice rides to Randall's Island of all places. John has ambitions of doing sunset BBQ rides to that picturesque locale.
The island is really impressive, nestled under the Triborough Bridge and featuring many green spaces, all surrounded by the roiling waters of the upper East River. I only started the Strava recording at this point given the spectacular nature of this location. In the future, I'll be sure to record the ride in its entirety.
In the end, I'm glad I did this ride and will probably volunteer for next Wednesday's slot. Yes, it's a grueling four or five hours, but in the end, it's well worth it for all parties concerned.
