🚵♂️ E-MTB Off-Road Ride Report
📅 Sunday Ride
We set off from Kokkino Chorio at 07:30. The morning was still cool, the village cloaked in silence—save for the solemn toll of the church bell echoing through the lanes.
Two lines came to mind. From Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls, as Jordan whispers to his lover in a quiet meadow: “Did thee feel the earth move?”
And from Metallica’s For Whom the Bell Tolls, off their Ride the Lightning album:
“Make his fight on the hill in the early day.”
Tarmac took us to Kambia, our first pick-up point. Then came the swift, familiar plunge down 4 Hills Climb—loose, fast, and early—to meet the rest of the group at Gavalochori, gathered quietly in the square on this still Sunday morning.
We rode north into harder ground: the Level 4 hill track toward The Roller Coaster—a chaos of stone, root, and sudden pitch.
Then came the descent: fast, shifting gravel, rock steps, and sharp line choices.
We emerged into calm—centuries-old olive groves on soft, grass double-track 🌿—before climbing into Tsivaras on tarmac. But peace is short-lived on this route. A tight, rocky descent flung us downhill at speed, dropping into Armeni.
Here we refuelled: coffee, chicken pie, apple pie—as good a Sunday Eucharist as one can hope for.
☕️ Mid-Ride Myth: The Shadow of Meriones
In Homer’s Iliad, Meriones—Cretan warrior and charioteer to King Idomeneus—was famed not only for his skill in battle, but for how he moved through terrain. He did not command armies from above; he rode close to the ground, fast and precise, fighting uphill and downhill. It is said that long after Troy fell, Meriones returned to ride the hills of Crete alone, his wheels spinning where hooves once struck.
And some say that on quiet mornings, in places like Gavalochori, Armeni, or high above the Kiliaris River, his line is still the fastest.
After Armeni, we headed west, looping toward Kalyves on fast gravel lanes. We skirted No Name Hill, rising and falling along the ridgeline above the river—its dry bed lined with memory and dust.
Turning inland once more, we passed through olive groves, climbed over the saddle toward Gavalochori, and then hit 4 Climbs Hill—a final test, short but sharp, drawing out what was left in the legs.
A fast drop to Kambia, then a smooth glide on tarmac back to Kokkino Chorio, now awake, the silence of the morning replaced by the hum of midday.
