The ride measured 38.8 kilometres with 782 metres of climbing, about forty percent of it off-road. By any measure, it was a comfortable Level 2–3 loop, suitable for all riders, with climbs that pulled steadily but never brutally, and a few rocky double tracks that demanded concentration. The thermometer told its own story: twenty-five degrees at the start, sixteen in the shaded Enchanted Forest, and then, by the time the loop closed, thirty-seven degrees pressing down in the heat of the day.
I left Kokkino Chorio at half past six, the sun just beginning to tip over the ridge. Gavalochori came quickly, shutters still closed, the air cool. Beyond lay the Venetian Wells, hidden in their grove of plane trees. There are twenty-four of them, stone mouths built in the fifteenth or sixteenth century, standing over foundations far older, perhaps Dorian. They were never for drinking, but for watering animals, heating water for laundry, and the daily gathering of village life. Fires were lit here, clothes beaten on stone, and gossip carried across the troughs. Women collected plane tree leaves for mattress stuffing. Each year on the 3rd of November, the villagers honoured St. George, sampling the new wine, the first carafe poured into a well as an offering. Today, the twin plane trees, their trunks entwined, stand as a quiet emblem of that continuity — a place where lives were lived, where time itself seems to fold.
The track carried me to Xirosterni, then on to Kefalas, and into the Enchanted Forest. The shade dropped the temperature, the air alive with birdsong, the silence broken only by the tyres over roots and stones. Shepherds still keep sheep here, their bells carrying faintly through the trees. From the cool of the forest, I pressed on to Vamos, reaching Macky’s Café by half past eight. Coffee and Danish pastries were waiting — Nick’s kindness, as ever, and Brian’s Royal Navy stories, half-buried in Jack Speak, but carried with laughter enough that no one minded what was lost in translation.
The return was along the ridge toward Litsarda, a turn back through the Enchanted Forest, Kefalas once more, and finally, the push home to Kokkino Chorio. By then the sun had hardened, the heat reflecting from the tracks, but the ride had already done its work: shade, dust, and the sense of moving quietly through villages that hold centuries in their stones.
A relaxed loop — wells, forest, coffee in Vamos, and the reminder that an E-MTB ride in Crete is never only about distance or elevation. It is about freedom, flow, and quiet discovery, each track carrying its own echo of the island’s long memory.
