The day’s ride measured 35kilometres, with 716 metres of climbing. The Hammerhead recorded two hours and eight minutes in the saddle, with just over an hour spent on ascent. Gradients bit, as hard as +18.7% on the climbs and dropped to –16.9% on the descents. Forty percent of the route was off-road, the rest a mix of village tarmac and linking tracks. By any measure, it was a solid Level 3–4 ride: steady climbs, flowing stretches, and just enough rough ground to demand attention.
I rolled out early from Kokkino Chorio, the village still quiet. The descent of the Four Hills Climb loosened the legs and carried me quickly into Gavalochori, where the square was only just stirring. Beyond lay the Aspro Track, rocky and gravely through the woods, and then the twisting rises of the Roller Coaster. The track wound through the trees, stones shifting under the tyres, and for a while, there was only the hum of chain and the dry rustle of cicadas.
Past Tsivaras, the road turned upward. Water Tower Hill and the descent that followed dropped me into Armeni. There I stopped — coffee and a slice of apple pie, rich and sharp, a pause that tied me to the place.
From Armeni, the ride turned outward again. The slopes above the Kiliaris River, undulating fast running, dust rising in the heat. A stretch of bypass road linked me back to the olive groves, quiet once more, before the Aspro Tracks returned. Then the sting in the tail: the Four Hills Climb, now uphill, demanding one last effort before the final push through Kambia and home to Kokkino Chorio.
As the dust settled, I thought of another man who knew the weight of Crete’s hills: Ioannis Vlachos, known as Daskalogiannis. A shipowner from Sfakia, he led the ill-fated revolt of 1770 against Ottoman rule. Learned, wealthy, and proud, he gambled everything for freedom. The rebellion failed, and he was captured, flayed alive in Heraklion. Yet his death became legend, immortalised in The Song of Daskalogiannis — one of the earliest works of modern Greek literature in the Cretan dialect.
The poem makes him more than a man: a symbol of resistance, a reminder that Crete’s soil is soaked with sacrifice as well as sunlight. Riding those rugged tracks, feeling the heat press down and the dust rise up, it seemed fitting to think of him. A humble tribute perhaps, but every climb and every descent carried its own echo of his defiance.
A classic summer loop — dusty tracks, gravel, rocks and solitude, a coffee in Armeni, and the sense that even the quietest ride can carry the weight of history.
