Started at 637 am, not 737 of rwgps.
Been a long time to be on this route! Also was a bit apprehensive to be out here when the temps were going to be high! Yet off I went! I started at the Flagstaff Mall ( about mile 7 of the original route) instead of the Bashas Woodlands as it was closer to where I was staying and would get me to Wupatki climb, sooner!
Well if I thought yesterday was cool, today was 54F at the start! I opted to NOT wear the orange windbreaker! I
I was right, it was hot on the climb! I had stopped on the Wupatki Visitor center, mile 39.6 to refill water bottles from bathroom ( since the outside fountain was turned off due to bees). There I filled an extra, small plastic bottle with water, just in case.
Some conflicting data points here during the Wupatki climb from miles 41.9 - 55.4. My ride computer showed 104F a couple times! Yes it was warm, but not that warm, so I think the sun really baked the computer! Plus of the 4 cars that came towards me on the climb, 2 of them had their windows down, so it was NOT 100F! LOL. At times on the climb there was not wind ( or a slight tailwind) so I would heat-up a bit more. Yet more often, there was a slight breeze and it was not bad.
It was sad and still I was happy! I knew a fire had burned through here and I had seen many dead trees, yet there were actually more living trees than I expected. Just sad to know that any of them were burned!
Took a break at the to of the Wupatki climb to drink and eat a bit and look at Sunset Crater, mile 55.4. Glad that climb was done, yet it was not as bad as I was dreading. Still a bit more climbing to get to the Sunset Crater visitor center.
There I refilled bottles and headed out. More climbing to get back to AZ 89 and descend into outskirts of Flag. I could feel the headwind starting! It was maybe 10 mph! It was a slog getting up the hill on the approach into Flag proper at mile 71.2. Then had to go past the van which was at the mall and over to the Woodlands.
This route takes a different way over there than the Clint's Well perm, so that was nice. Slog it was! Yet I knew that once I got to the Woodlands and returned the same route back to the mall and the van,. I would have a tailwind!
Those 7 miles from Woodlands to van were wonderfully easy!
Another great day of Flagstaff cycling! I need to make a couple more shorter 100k perms for up here.
