The route starts in the village of Artemare and heads out of the Town on the D904 for 5 Km to begin the climb of the Col du Ballon in the village of Virieu le Grand. The first part is a real shock at 13% but it eventually sorts itself out to a more gentle gradient. A short descent around a small lake is followed by the final Km to the top. Take care on the descent it is narrow with some long drop and there can be some gravillions on the road. The D1504 is joined for a short distance, which leads into the climb of the Col de Portes. The majority of the climb follows a fairly steady gradient but following a short descent with 4 Km to go the gradient steepens for the last push. Return by the same route, until the village of La Rivoliere Ordonnaz, where a fantastic descent begins to the village of Contrevoz. A quick shimmy through the back streets leads to a further descent to Pugieu. The D904 is picked up again for the return to Artemare.
