It was cold as we packed up this morning so we decided to try out the Shamay Cafe on the west end of town. They have great food, good prices and incredibly delicious bannock. If you are in Kamsack, check them out.
We headed west through town and took the first gravel road heading north along the rivers. Our hearts sank as we found ourselves looking at a pretty, winding farm road with a thick fresh layer of pit run gravel, the gravel consisting of a mix of 2-3 inch rocks and sand. There was a small space along one shoulder so we thought we would give it a try. About a kilometre later the heavy gravel ended, Yay! The rest of the day was spent on roads that varied from light to moderate gravel with only a few heavier sections.
We wanted to try and stay close to the two rivers, first the Whitesand and then the Assiniboine. We also wanted to try and ride the lesser roads but the problem of bridges arose. They were located mostly along the grid roads so we ended up riding more of those than we usually try to. Oh well, a necessary trade off I guess.
We kept heading north and west past Crystal Lake and Tadmore and then swung north towards Sturgis where we camped at the Sturgis and District Regional Park. Very fittingly located (for us) on the bank of the Assiniboine River.
