NPS camp to Jenny Lake
Pivot day!
I woke up to a nice morning up Grassy Lake road at the NPS spot. I packed up reasonably quickly and was on the road at 9:00 after saying a heartfelt thank you to the nice young couple who let me crash in their spot. My plan was to ride to Colter Bay, spend a good part of the of the day there, and continue another 20 miles or so to a place called Turpin Meadows. The first part of the plan started off perfectly. A nice gravel downhill for several miles, then pavement for about 15 to Colter Bay. Although the tourist traffic was a bit nerve wracking, I rolled into Colter Bay without incident.
The first building a came to was a small grocery store, and I went in to get a few things. When i came back out, there was another bike packer sitting at a picnic table, and of course we struck up a conversation. Among many other things, he said he was going to divert from the normal Great Divide route “because of the fire”. After I asked “what fire”, he showed me where it was in proximity to the great divide route, and he said he heard some cyclists had been evacuated from a camp 2 days prior. So began the pivot.
I called Jill and she was all over it. Although we couldn’t find any definite news the great divide roads were closed, the location of the fire suggested it was likely. We decided not to chance it, and my chief cartographer got to work! She built me a route from Colter Bay through Jackson, then some gravel roads into Pinedale, where I will rejoin the regular GDMBR. She’s the best! As of this writing, I have done a small part of the reroute and am at Jenny Lake campground in Teton NP.
Back to Colter bay; I found a laundromat there!?! Score. So, while Jill and I were trying to solve the fire problem, I did all my laundry and charged my electronics. It’s the little things while bike packing! I did have a little time to dip my toes in Jackson Lake before I made the ride to Jenny Lake.
So there you have it—the first significant snag of the trip, but with a partner and chief cartographer, not really a snag; just an adventure in a different direction for a couple days. I’m grateful for her. I’ll let everyone know how the route looks, and I’ll keep pedaling south!
