Jenny Lake to Kilgore creek
Pivot day 2!
I really enjoyed my camp at Jenny Lake campground. They have an ample hiker/biker area, several CCC era buildings converted into new uses (such as showers), and it’s in a beautiful location. I woke up to a warm morning, hoping the smoke would have cleared overnight, but alas—still hazy. I packed up as usual, and got on the road about 9. I was going to roll through the main visitor center/store area on my way out, but was stopped by a park police officer and told to go around as there was a congressional committee looking at the park today. Fair enough; and once again I was happy to be on a bike as I rolled right onto the trail to Jackson, while it was traffic gridlock in and around the visitor center.
I rolled smoothly into Jackson on a separate bike path, and although it was smoky, I enjoyed the view without fear of being squished by an RV. I went right to the main square, and after considering many restaurant options, I chose one called The Bunnery that was still serving breakfast. I had a very good bacon omelette and more than my share of good coffee, then walked around Jackson a bit. I then went to a bike shop for a couple things, called Jill, then went to a restaurant and got a BBQ beef brisket sandwich to stuff in my bike bag for dinner.
I was then on another separate bike path along the highway and the Snake river. I stopped several times to take pictures and watch people fish—not catch! The miles went by smoothly, and soon I was at the confluence of the Snake and Hoback rivers, where I was to leave the bike path and make the left turn up the Hoback river. In all, I had cycled 37 miles on separated paths! Occasionally I get “path envy” in places I travel—this was one f those times. I jumped back on the highway shoulder heading up the Hoback on an ample shoulder separated by “rumble strips”. I had about 15 miles of such highway, and it was fine—in fact, I found the Hoback canyon very beautiful and interesting—I took a lot pictures.
Still, I was happy to finally turn off on gravel again and forget about giant RVs for a while. The route Jill built me was great—every bit as good as the main GDMBR, and I enjoyed the views. I pedaled up Cliff Creek, then up and over a steep ridge to the east, then down a long drainage back to the same highway I was on earlier. After only about 2 miles on the highway, I once again took a right on the relative peace of gravel, once again heading up the Hoback River . My plan after studying the map the night before was to camp soon after I got on the Hoback River road and be in good position to make it to Pinedale and the main GDMBR the next day. Well…I didn’t count on all the private land on the lower part of the river. I pedaled on and on, getting a little more tired by the minute, and chasing darkness to find a place to camp. I finally spotted a pickup coming slowly down a side road (road hunting!?!), and after he turned onto the main road, I went up the little road to check it out. Mercifully, there was a good spot about a mile up this road, on a small creek called Kilgore Creek. Relieved, I quickly filtered some water, and set up camp via headlamp. I was tired, cold and hungry. Once I took care of the hungry and cold part, I felt so much better. I watched a huge red moon rise above the trees while I sipped a cup of tea. I drifted off grateful for that moon, the little creek, and the fact that I was even there…
