That was a great morning of cycling! It was a bit cool today, so waited to start at around 8am. Still I wore a vest and arm warmers up Legler Valley and a few miles later, removed them. I noticed from the start that the Grade reading on my Wahoo = 0. I kept hoping it would work. Then around 10 miles into the ride, not knowing anything else to do, I opted to end that ride, shut off the Wahoo, start a new ride. Then after I was done cycling for the day, I joined them together in RWGPS. This is why the first 10 miles do not show any elevation changes! UGH
Overall I am pleased with this route! VERY low traffic as I counted no more than 15 cars that overtook me on the route and that included the riding through Monroe, WI. A few more than that can at me from other direction.
Lots of hills and some very steep ones, in fact my computer showed I reached over 14% on the last hill on S
Lots of cows, fields, nice barns, manicured yards, a couple turkeys in the field, farmers harvesting soybeans & corn, roads were all good to excellent ( except one in Monroe that was being dug up, so had to go around it), and lots of memories of riding in the area of Skinner Hollow, Hiawatha, Smock Valley , and Cadiz Springs, Allen Rd, and Franklin Rd that it sometimes brought back too many memories.
Before those roads, I had to get out of New Glarus first and Legler Valley was chilly & pretty. So were all the rest of the roads over to Holstein Prairie Rd. Ok, I have a bone to pick with whoever named that road! It was totally in the valley but I did see some holstein cows. I doubled checked the map and I rode the entire length of Holstein Prairie Rd and it was ALL in the valley.
At the east end of Holstein Prairie Rd was a well-mowed area around a set of buildings. Huge mowed area. A big driveway was in front of buildings indicating it was something more than a residence. The sign over the buildings read Harley Davidson. The mailbox read Apparitions MC. It is the home of the Apparitions Harley Davidson motorcycle club! Cool.
Then south on C/J to the highest spot in Green County, WI. Great views even with the corn obscuring some of them. Then further south to Rustic Rd ( Skinner Hollow). I realized on this ride that this area was where Skinner Creek starts. The Skinner Creek is important as it formed a border on some of my childhood land!
Skinner Creek Hollow to Hiawatha to Smock Valley to Cadiz Springs was my favorite section. Trees, cows, stream, smooth roads, great views and tough climbs.
Too bad that while on Cadiz Springs and east of the foundry, looking west up above the foundry to see the farm, that the trees had grown up too much to see the farm where I grew up. Dang it.
Cadiz Springs Rec area lake looks great! Then on over to the winery. It was 1045am when I got there and the sign said open but the business hours started at 11am, so I could not find anyone to help me. So I used the bathroom, looked out at the patio and there were 3 ladies sitting there and 1 lady that I guessed was the employee standing up talking to them. I waited a few seconds and she did not show any intention of coming back inside, so I just left, since I knew I was going slow with all the stops of pictures and resetting my computer.
