We weren't sure where to ride this weekend but then I remembered Off The Grid is doing a limited run of Saturdays on Treasure Island until November.
They didn't list the food trucks that were going to be there and there were questions about whether the ferry schedule listed would be the only ferries available or if there were more as the mentioned they were adding service to account for the increased demand.
On the schedule there was a 2 hour gap between the 1:30p and 3:30p ferries that we didn't want to get caught in. But estimating the time it would take to get up there, we realized it should be perfect for catching the 3:30p ferry. The only other catch was they only had room for 6 bikes.
The forecast originally looked pretty good but when I checked this morning the winds had changed and we were going to get crosswinds or headwinds most of the day, no matter what direction we did the route in. BS!!!
6.66 miles into the ride, in that Maple St. housing development by Bair Island, I got a rear puncture. The old gravel route was closed off and now there's a detour that takes you through what was the construction area before. I must have run over a piece of metal because it sliced straight in. I didn't realize it, the guys told me as I had sealant spraying.
The funny thing is last night I was wondering if I had enough sealant but YOLO'd it and didn't actually check because I never get flats. Well I had plenty of sealant but it wasn't sealing the cut for some reason. Sonny whipped out a plug for me and Bob grabbed his pump and it sealed up perfectly and we managed to put in the perfect amount of air.
It was super peaceful and calm out on the levee by Coyote Hills all the way until our first stop at DoughWeiMe, which was about halfway to lunch. We may have over done it with the pastry order. I'm not sure what Bob order exactly but it was a croissant with some fruit filling, possibly pineapple? Sonny ordered stuff to share because they were kind of big. The Banana Bread, which was like a small loaf, maybe 3"x5"? and a Dubai Chocolate Croissant. Both were delicious. I originally only ordered a mini Guava Cream Cheese Malasada but then the full size Fig and Brie Malasadas came out so I had to get one of those. Both were really good too. I also ordered and Iced Honeycomb Toffee Latte which was yummy as well.
The wind picked up once we got going again. Also getting a pickup - Bob, seemingly not used to having so much sugar as he's been on a diet and loosing weight. On the trail he just took off, doing what he complains Sonny does all the time.
Later on it was Sonny's turn to rip it in the headwind on gravel and I knew Bob was going to complain about it later, which he did. I was having none of it and sent both of them to their rooms without dinner. :)
Everything was pretty nice until we left Alameda, which I have to say, felt like a very quaint place to live. It was urban slog through Oakland. With the headwind it felt like it took forever only briefly broken up when Bob tried to kill me. We were having a debate about whether things were "the something" or just "something" and he did an emphatic finger pointing down gesture that caused him to veer towards me. I was to the left of him and luckily there weren't any cars next to me when I had to do my emergency avoidance.
This was Bob and Sonny's first time on the Bay Bridge bike path and Sonny's first time on Treasure Island. I had warned them about the super steep hill connected Yerba Buena Island to Treasure Island and the reason for doing the loop in this direction was so we didn't have to climb it. They fully agreed that it shouldn't be climbed.
Off The Grid was pretty busy. There weren't that many food trucks - four? But there were also tents with food vendors around the perimeter. On the way to the food trucks, I ended up stopping in front of a vendor that looked pretty good so we just grabbed food from there. Bob and Sonny got the Falafel Plate, which unfortunately the falafels were dry. I got the Chicken Gyro Plate which was delicious.
We finished lunch around 2:45p and headed over to the ferry. We barely had to wait in line before we started loading on. Best of all, it was free! I don't really know why there's a six bike limit. Not only was it mostly empty but there was also plenty of room for more bikes. The trip was pretty fast too.
I originally had us routed on the path/sidewalk after the Ferry Terminal but it looked busy so we took Embarcadero. Only problem was we hit every red light. The path didn't look so bad so we went back to it and I nearly got taken out by a Prius speeding out of a parking lot. The path was kind of busy too. It wasn't so bad though and we were moving at least.
This is how much I don't care about baseball. I was wondering if there was a Giants Game today and whether we'd need to avoid the path because of crowds but I was like, I haven't heard about any games. It's not even baseball season at the moment. Obviously it's the baseball season. Well, we ended up getting to the park right as the game was over and people were letting out.
The part from Cesar Chavez to Brisbane is the worst. There's no good way through that part of the city. Made me kind of want to take Caltrain home. It didn't help that we had that cross/headwind when we should've been getting a tailwind. We luckily did get some tailwind after the airport until we got into Foster City.
On the final climbs home, I decided to push but was also close to cramping which hasn't happened in a while.
Parts of that ride were great but the urban stuff is really not great. I would do this ride very differently if I were to do it again.
