The weather was awful today - I had a great breakfast at the Bakery in St Vith waiting for the weather to give me a clue.
I was steady rain but the forecast was heavier between 10 and 2.
So I knew I had to cycle in bad weather but wanted to minimise it !
By 10:30 it was slightly worse tha steady so I set off and spent the next 20 mkles getting progressively wetter in moderate to heavy rain.
I was on an old raileay line called the Vennbahn which would take me all the way to Aachen and it started 50metrrs from my Guest House... Fancy that !
There were 3 fallen trees across the track I had to dodge round but I made good progress before stopping at 18 mkles gaving spotted coffee and shelter in a wooden hut at one of the old stations.
As I arrived so too did about 20 others who had pedalled a set of metal bogeys along 7km of the track ... timing or what !
The middle 20 miles were the best as the weather broke and the sun even made a appearance.
I was now on the section of the Vennbahn which snakes a narrow corridor of Belgium through Germany on both sides of the track.
This was an effortless days cycling and in no timr I was approavhing Aachen, finally the line yielded and gave way to Germany which I entered at the most inoccuous border point.
The last 10 miles now decided to throw 40mph winds at me but it didnt deter the ride, then one last laugh, habing dried off in the wind in the last mike an absolute torrent of a downpour started, I ducked for cover with 800 yards to go ! Next was hailstones, this is getting silly - 15 minutes later I reached ny hotel across the street !
