We departed Kokkino Chorio at 09:00. The sun was peering through broken cloud, already beginning to warm the morning air.
The first stretch carried us up to Drapanos, steady on tarmac, before the turn toward Kefalas. The village was quiet, shutters still half-drawn, the day just beginning.
From there we dropped into the Enchanted Forest. The track here was as ever rocky, stony, and shaded — dry under the pines but still holding the coolness of the valley bottom. We rode out on to the Dry Stone Wall Track, its lines cutting between old boundary walls built by hand, stones balanced into place generations ago.
At Litsarda, a quiet village tucked into the ridge, we picked up the off-road line. Litsarda has always felt slightly apart, a place of narrow streets and old houses, where the square gathers its few shops and café tables under the trees. The village’s name is Venetian in origin, recorded in the Barozzi census of 1577, and it has survived in much the same form since. Its shaded paths mark the transition from the settled valleys to the harsher ridges above.
From Litsarda, we rode the ridge track, a rough and rocky line, before looping around Vamos and picking up the climb of Signal Tower Hill. The gradient bit hard, the descent sharp and loose, demanding steady control.
We then crossed to the Health Centre Track, rough and undulating, before rejoining the Ridge Route. The line carried us back once again to Litsarda, where we stopped for a birthday brunch in the square — tables laid under the trees, food shared in the Cretan way, laughter carrying across the village.
The day’s ride covered 39.5 km in 2 hours 26 minutes, with 790 metres of climbing. In all there were six climbs and five descents, the gradients pressing as hard as +12.8% and dropping to –16.2%. Of that time, 1 hour 26 minutes was spent climbing. It was a ride measured not only in distance but in effort and elevation, each climb shaping the rhythm of the day.
Litsarda itself is closely linked with Saint Charalambos, its parish saint. The chapel dedicated to him stands near the centre, a reminder of the protector often invoked in Crete. During the Ottoman period, when plague struck, villagers prayed to Saint Charalambos, believed to have the power to hold back illness and shield communities. To this day, his feast on 10 February is marked with liturgy and offerings, and the people of Litsarda — like many across Crete — honour him not only in the church but in the lives they live together. His presence connects the village’s history with its endurance.
In Greece, birthdays are marked, but the greater celebration is often the name day — the feast day of the saint after whom one is named. On that day, friends and family call, houses are open, food and drink are freely offered, and greetings flow without invitation. In Apokoronas villages, name days remain strong: neighbours appear without notice, bearing small gifts, or simply themselves, and are always welcomed with a glass of tsikoudia and a plate of meze. The streets echo with “Χρόνια Πολλά!” — literally “many years!” — a wish for long life and joy.
Yet when a birthday and a gathering meet, the spirit is much the same: a sense of belonging, of community, of being remembered.
Herodotus understood the rhythm of human fellowship in travel. In The Histories he remarks, “Men trust their journeys to chance, but the wise know that companionship makes the road lighter.” (Book VIII). It is an insight that fits these rides perfectly: the effort of stone tracks and steep ridges is softened when shared, and even a solitary rider carries with him the voices and stories of those who rode before.
Elsewhere, Herodotus reflects, “Of all possessions, a faithful friend is the most desirable.” (Book IX). The line came to mind as we sat in Litsarda with food spread across the table. The bond of riding together, of sharing both hardship on the climbs and laughter in the square, is its own wealth — not measured in euros, drachmas, or kilometres, but in memory and fellowship.
Crete carries this truth in its very landscape. The small roadside chapels — like that of Saint Charalambos in Litsarda or the anonymous Church with No Name we pass on other routes — are more than markers of faith. They are also waypoints of community, anchoring memory and continuity. Riders, like villagers, use them to orient themselves, to pause, to take in both place and time. They are points where the physical road and the spiritual road cross.
Mandináda (first written in English, then rendered into Greek):
On stony paths we ride today, with friends the road feels light,
a birthday shared in Crete’s embrace makes every moment bright.
