The original plan was to do Cowell-Purisima Coastal trail and head up to Mori Point (which would’ve added about 25mi. to the ride).
When I got to HMB, the wind was howling and it was freezing - not what was forecast. So I had to throw on more layers and I decided I didn't feel like fighting the headwind coming back from Cowell-Purisima so I just started north.
Weirdly, once I was past the section of trail next to the downtown, the wind calmed and the temperature rose to what was forecast and I had to take all my layers off.
I started the ride around lunch time. At first I wasn't hungry and I thought I'd have lunch at Burger Board in Pacifica but before I was even past downtown HMB, I was hungry. I didn't really want to make the detour to downtown and then I remembered Caffé Mezza Luna on the way up.
I've liked what I've had at Caffé Mezza Luna before but the pizza was just okay. Too much cheese and soggy, floppy, thin crust.
The further north I went the nicer it got. The sun came out in Pacifica and it made all the green grass and wildflowers really pop!
I skipped some stuff along the way with the hope of getting to Mori Point but as I climbed the south side of San Pedro Mtn./Planet of the Apes, I realized, I wasn't going to have time. I didn't think I'd even have time to descend the north side and come back along Devil's Slide Trail so I made the decision to do Old Colma Rd. Towards the top, the wind got chilly again but luckily I didn't need to put any layers back on.
Doing Old Colma Rd. worked out perfectly because I haven't done it all year and I've been wanting to badly. I keep asking people to go but no one ever wanted to go so in the end, I still did it by myself. I can't help but be bitter about that.
The trail seemed a little more technical with more loose, chunky, rocks than before.
The way back was even better thanks to more downhills and more favorable wind direction. The sun was starting to peek below the high clouds too so the light was very dramatic.
Once I got back to Francis Beach, the layers had to go back on. The howling wind and freezing wind chill were back.
I didn't think I was going to make it back until after sunset but I managed to make it back right at sunset. The way back was much faster than the way out.
