Beautiful warm day. It's fun to bike in West L.A., with the mix of remote roads in the mountains and familiar tourist attractions. My plan was to go up and down Baldwin Hills Overlook, then up through Beverly Hills and Franklin Canyon to Mulholland. Then back via Sepulveda, Wilshire, and San Vicente.
But road closures meant more exploration than planned!
Baldwin Hills always feels good, but hard: 0.6 miles at 10-12%.
After that, I've resolved never to ride Robertson Boulevard again: No bike lanes and angry drivers. Instead, I went up Beverwil Drive, with little detours to take pictures of the Benedict Canyon Channel.
Then up Rodeo Drive past Dolce & Gabbana and through Beverly Hills to Franklin Canyon.
I climbed 500 feet up Franklin Canyon only to find the last pitch up to Mulholland has been closed for construction since October, after the last time I biked it.
So, to explore, I descended Lake Drive to the powerhouse gate, just because I haven't done that before. (Turns out Franklin Canyon Park has restrooms down there!) Then back up to Franklin Canyon Drive and down through Beverly Hills for the familiar right turn onto Wilshire Boulevard to head back toward Venice.
But Wilshire Boulevard was closed for the Golden Globes ceremony at the Beverly Hilton! I had a nice chat with one of the many private security staff.
At his suggestion, I climbed up Whittier to Sunset Boulevard (normally dangerous on a bike, but today the traffic was heavy and slow, OK for lane-splitting) and down Beverly Glen to join Wilshire on the other side of the Los Angeles Country Club.
Wilshire was fine for a few blocks, but it was closed at Westwood Boulevard for the subway construction.
Another short detour through Westwood to Veterans Avenue, and Wilshire was closed again for a Free Iran protest at the Federal Building. I sneaked past on the sidewalk to get back on Wilshire, under the I-405 freeway, and via the Veterans Home access roads to join San Vicente.
After that, smooth sailing!
