A walk with Pete and Dave from Sandwich (and a coffee at the Bell to start) to Broadstairs. A beautiful and fine day until later when it clouded over. At the end we met Pete and Oscar the dog at the Tartar Frigate and were driven back to the Carpenter's Inn (picking up John along the way).
The walk itself was tedious as we left Sandwich over the Toll Bridge and trudged a couple of miles through the industrial estate. We did pass the replica Viking Ship. Then it was pleasant walking along the River Stour estuary and looking at the seals basking on the river bank and all the wading birds. The tide was very low.
Then we reached the small chalk cliffs at Cliffsend and found where the hoverport used to be. Then a fellow directed us to a small tunnel through the chalk and we popped up to the path along the clifftop. We had a pint at the Belle Vue which did indeed have a splendid view over the mudflats and bay. After that we followed the clifftop path around to Ramsgate and dropped down to the harbour.
No sign of the kingfisher which lives here. No large sailing boats either just the usual collection yachts and what have you. We briefly looked at the Ramsgate Tunnels which were designed to bring the railway to the harbour. This station was opened in 1863 and closed in 1926: later it was a narrow-gauge tourist railway (closed 1965). The tunnels were used as an air-raid shelter during WW2.
We took the stairs up to the path along the top and looked down at where the saltwater lido used to be. It was a fabulous art deco structure built in 1935 and closed in 1975. We sometimes used to visit as children in the early 1960s. Dad would always show off by diving off the highest board and we would be mucking around in the water. We used the one at Folkestone at lot more frequently.
From there we walked along the top to Broadstairs via Dumpton Gap. The Tartar Frigate pub is named after HMS Tartar built on the Medway in 1801.
Birds seen along the way: Peregrine, Lapwing, Curlew, Knot, Dunlin, Sanderling and Fulmar.
