Vietnam 01/23/26: Tuan Giao to Son La

Climb out of Tuan Giao is big to start the day. You track above the main Highway which was nice but not totally necessary as there wasnt much traffic at all. I did enjoy the villages near the top on this more rural route: lots of school children walking and cycling. Perhaps 22km in there should be views both sides if it’s clear weather.

Freezing cold and misty at Pha Din viewpoint, but a nice descent. Near the end of the descent, you can also take smaller roads but it adds climbing, so I stuck to the main highway.

Check out the Hang Bản Thẳm Cave - you can cycle through it. Spooky.

Son La - as soon as you enter Son La, turn off up towards the prison (there’s no big sign) there are some nice cafes with terraces for an afternoon drink. Galaxy Hotel was easy - pick a room at the back where it’s quieter.
