Phoenix Bike Trails was 1 of the extra 100k ride after the official Rouleur Week rides. The other was Humboldt, which I did not do.
I got a late start on this pre-ride and I was still getting over a head/chest infection so I did not ride very fast nor did I have much power. Still it was great to get outside for the day and ride some new section of trail and old sections that now had pavement instead of gravel!
The route initially goes past the Princess Hotel, where I ran into the expected traffic of the Phx Open Golf tournament. It was very easy to navigate. Then on to Bell Rd > McDowell Mtn Ranch Rd. It has been at least 10 years that I rode McDowell Mtn Ranch Rd, so that was a blast.
Then at mile 20.1 the route moved onto a trail in Scottsdale that I do not ever recall riding! Great pavement on the sidewalk. In this area I rode the street since trail was the sidewalk and street was brand new and no traffic. At 20.5 I jumped to sidewalk/trail since it was diverging from the street.
Turns out this is actually part of the Maricopa Trail, which completely surprised me, as seen in the pic at mile 21.7. From looking at RWGPS map I see that the Maricopa trail runs on Cactus from here east to FLW & across to canal and via Linda.
Today's route continues south past the Shea hospital and this is a section I had ridden, but now it was all new cement. It continues on to the "Scottsdale Greenbelt" which I have ridden a few times. It continues south to Tempe Town Lake at mile 35.7 before it turns to head toward Phx.
At mile 36.1 I did a bit of exploring to see what the ramada looked like up on Curry Rd as a possible SAG.
At mile 36.5 it finally accessed the Grand Canal Trail that runs to Phx! That was all dirt/gravel in this section when I last rode it 15 years ago. Now it is awesome cement, with some interpretive signs about Roosevelt Dam and a water feature at 37.1.
I was a bit confused at mile 37.4 about turning left over the canal and then right. Why didn't we just continue straight, as I saw other cyclists coming toward me and they did not do this little over and back to get to/from the sections on west vs east of Priest Dr?
From here to mile 43.4 the trail is brand new cement with lights and Hawk signals or signals that respond quickly to cyclists. In the old times, some of those intersections were not signals! This makes it very convenient to ride.
Then route headed north on 20th street! Very smooth and low traffic, north until it got to the ACDC at mile 46.7.
Then over to mile 52.7 and the Cave Creek Wash Trail ( aka Rose Mofford Sports Complex). Again, the last time I was on these trails was 15 years ago. Ros Mofford need to have some weeds removed but the soccer fields, tennis courts looked good.
Up to the Muni golf course at 55.8, I had to replace a punctured front tube! So used that rest stop there and then proceeded off course to the golf center to get water and use RR. Then back on course for the last 7 miles.
From mile 57.7 on up to Union Hills, I would have liked to have left the trail for the street! Sections were dirt and lots of little turns and a number of underpasses had folks with their gear all over.
All in all, a great route. It wil never be a fast route due to the Scottsdale Greenbelt always has peds, other bikes, skateboards, etc.
