Back during the full time racing season of my life I had hand made custom cycling shoes made from a cast of each foot.
Due to stunted growth plates from mercury in a polio vaccine administered at age 7 the right side of my body’s skeletal structures didn’t form in the same bone thickness, lengths and joint shapes on the right of my body's skeletal structuresy compared to the left side.
This resulted in a somewhat asymmetrically shaped pelvis and a 1/2 inch short right leg with smaller joints and more limber - stretchy ligaments along the with a range of different neurological differences also.
When I ordered then reconfi the Canyon Endurace I thought I’d not install the 1/2 in spacers on the right cleat like I had on my prior shoes and see if I could compensate via seat height adjustments and intentional calibration and coordination of each leg’s power application as they traveled the pedal circles until that became cellular memory.
That part worked out well until I realized the shorter leg was putting to much hamstringing force into the right side of the chamois and wearing its threads that secured it to the shorts on that side. 4 pair in a row in 4 months!
So I put 6 - 2mm thick carbon fiber SpeedPlay cleat shaped and slotted spacers between the sole of the right shoe and its cleat and immediately noticed a very appreciated equal pressure on both sitting bones and my power meter illustrated symmetrical power outputs without a lot off focused concentration on my part during todays ride.
It’ll be interesting to see how my legs feel tomorrow with this shift in joint alignments and beginning shift muscle development around those joints snd even within all the muscle group involved in the pedal stroke both sitting and out of the saddle.
Tomorrow I’ll also reevaluate my saddle height to see if it needs a change because of the 1/2 inch shift?
I’m sensing I could go a bit higher to bring the heels up a smidge to get more power out of the quads and further increase the smoothness of my spin and probably get more power into the higher RPM ranges…
