We had ridden through Woodside Hills/Woodside Heights/West of the Alameda neighborhoods before but I could NOT find the rides so I decided to a little exploro ride.
I saw when routing that there were two opportunities to cross under 280 so I wanted to check that out too.
The first one out of Woodside Hills was open. When I first enter the dirt, it's through a chainlink fence that people have decided to open a hole in. There were a few people with there dogs running around and at first I wasn't sure if they were going to say something but they didn't.
Woodside Hills was not the neighborhood I was looking for. I didn't find the nice houses in Woodside Heights I was looking for either.
Walsh Rd. (and the side roads) had quite a few newer, nice, mansions - including the $57M mansion for sale. It seemed like the nicest place on the street for sure.
Unfortunately the tunnel under 280 at the top of Walsh Rd. was gated off. Before getting to the trail, there are signs about private property and no trespassing. But at the trail there's a big sign about how it's the emergency evacuation route. I feel like I should report them for gating off an emergency route.
So I had to turn around and head back the way I came. I originally planned on going to Bici before finding the underpass/tunnel (on the map) at the top of Walsh but decided to go to Buck's instead. With the reroute, I thought about Bici again but I was a) looking forward to Buck's and b) we're going to Bici this week.
Kite Hill was full of poppies and quite pretty. It was nice to have the gravel bike there but not necessary.
Decending on a gravel bike is even less fun than I remembered. I was barely going as fast as I wanted to and hitting bumps felt like my brain was being smashed in to my skull. This is why XC MTB is better than a gravel bike.
I rode the gravel bike as a shakedown of the bike and to test it with the new Gravel Bike California Kit. I got a compliment at Buck's for the jersey. The bibs are not comfortable on or off the bike for me, unfortunately. The chamois is just the wrong shape with the padding in all the wrong places. Also not sure why there so much compression on my hips.
