Never been as lost and confused on a bike ride as Today ... It was great fun !
Day 1 : I cycled from Incheon Island into Seoul, the route would take me along the coast then across a ferry onto the mainland. Next there was a difficult route through heavily populated areas with lots of difficult junctions to cross but eventually I picked up the start of the four rivers of cycle route which led me straight into the heart of Seoul the weather was cool and thought it was warm when the sun was out it was typically about six degrees all day.
I had the bike built by 9am and cycled off about 9:30 however the cycle route was blocked off and after an hour of multiple dead ends I had to do about a mile down a motorway then jump a few ditches to finally get onto the cyclway which hugged the coast passing under one of the many motorway bridges off the island. I had a 10 mile route to get an hourly ferry - the only option off the island on a bike.
I ended up sprinting the last mile to catch the 12:30 with one minute to spare.
It took me to a seaside resort with lots of shops and arcades and a promenade with a monorail, I'd have liked to have stopped but pressed on.
The next two hours were difficult, the traffic was heavy and every junction was a nightmare with traffic lights staying on red for 5minutes at a time.
My routes worked but, there always seemed better routes available however it was impossible to work out the signage and every time I diverted onto a better route I ended up lost.
The gps was flakey and google maps not great either.
At one stage I was in an inside warehouse loading bay area with vans and fork lifts looking for a route !
Next I was surrounded by an enormous spur of motorways meeting up with no apparent way out, I eventually worked out an innocuous trail which rescued the situation.
I passed multiple great looking cycleways into the City but I had to track North to reach the start of the 4rivers route which I eventually did but it was tedious with all the traffic I was probably only doing 4mph !
I had passed through a great local Chinatown but other than that just a massive urban sprawl.
The cycleway start was good though, on the coast and not as built up. I found the phone box to stamp my card and cycled off through the starting archway.
A beautiful cycleway, straight into the city !
My route differed from reality, the signage wasnt understandable and when I tried to stay on the path I inevitably ended up lost !
So although the route had its problems I had to follow it. Eventually my route picked up the cycleway and I had a great 20 mile run into the City passing all the bridges - it was busy with thousands out cycling and running.
The last 5 miles probably took 3 hours into Gangnan.
Massive avenues with shared cycle and pedestrian walkways which didnt work well. Each junction could take 15minutes to get across waiting on multiple lights, then the last mile was in backstreets up punishing little hills before one last Avenue, Teheran-ro which, once crossed lead to my hotel.
Its hard to articulate just how monstrous of an Urban area that Incheon/Seoul is and it was a tough start - I ended up doing 61 miles instead if 50 ! But it worked and the remainder of the route looks a whole lot easier !
