Another fine walk via Lower Halstow, Upchurch and Ham Green, the Motney Hill Peninsular and The Horrid Hill spit. Grand bumping into Marc at the Riverside Country Park.
It was a beatiful blue sky day. All day. Dave was wearing shorts. Wish I was too. Soon we were walking around in T-shirts. The signs of spring were all around us: Primroses and Lesser Celandine.
Purple and White Dead Nettles and Creeping Jenny (blue flowers sometimes called Ground Ivy). Butterflies were about too: plenty of Brimstones and Peacocks. Also saw a couple of Commas and Large Whites.
Sadly it was High Tide in the middle of the day so we didn't get a chance to see the waders feeding on the mudflats or marshes. Don't forget the Kestrel we saw dead on the roadside: probably hit by a car when hunting. I was surprised by the pinkness of its chest feathers. Pete later found a Slow Worm on the path, It was a fabulous bronze colour. Gutted I didn't photograph it.
There was plenty of blossom about too. Blackthorn, a few sprinkes of early Hawthorn and plenty of Cherry Blossom in the orchards.
The church at quay at Lower Halstow was grand. Marc told us later of a Lead Font in this church which is worth looking at!
We had a little chat with a woman scraping the paint off the deck of a Thames Barge she was restoring. Hard work and I expect it'll be a while before it's shipshape. Naturally we saw a few wrecks around the coast. Some are havens for waders waiting for the tide to turn so they can feed. At Horrid Hill we saw a few signs telling us about the birds to be seen and the history of Concrete Works formerly at Horrid Hill.
Looking across the estuary we could see the Hoo Fort and the Durnet Fort. Both Forts are 19thC, built in the 1870s to protect the Naval Dockyards at Chatham. We'll get a closer view when we walk the other side of the Medway. They were decomissioned before WW1 and used as observation posts in WW2.
Birds that we saw: Green Woodpecker (good spot from Dave in that little orchard), Great Spotted Woodpecker - heard drumming, Buzzard, Kestrel, Curlew, Redshank, Bar Tailed Godwit, Turnstone, Dark Bellied Brent Geese, Greylag Geese, Wigeon, Teal, Little Egret, Heron, Black Headed Gull, Fieldfare, Mistle Thrush, Meadow Pippit, Rock Pippit.
