Started with a visit to the Visitors Centre in Dover. Not that they had much information about the WH. They did have a map of the Dour Walk. We then had a coffee in the Arts Centre place.
As you can see we had some fun wandering around the WH which we never really found. The sign posting was terrible. We did find the ruins of the Templar Church. We'll do it all again when a) we visit the Grand Shaft on an open-day and/or b) when we explore Samphire Hoe for early orchids in mid-May.
We did have some cracking views over the channel and across to the castle. We also saw the gun emplacements for WW2. On our way down we came across Cowgate Cemetery but didn't explore further as a bloke with a vicious looking dog arrived.
Back in town we got to the Dour and followed it all the way to Temple Ewell. Mostly the walk is beside the river itself. Not great when passing the supermarkets and in places you do have to wander off piste. The river itself looked in good health. Running quite clear. We did see a big Brown Trout out at River.
We noticed the Buckland Elm at St. Andrew's church which apparently had been moved in 1880 when the church was extended. It's claimed to be 1700 years old.
River and Kearsney Abbey were fine but we cracked on to the Fox Inn for a welcome pint or two. Haha the host was as miserable as we'd be told to expect. Everyone we know has mentioned it and he didn't disappoint.
After that we strolled past the allotments up to the Nature Reserve and sat on the slopes overlooking Temple Ewell for our sandwiches. We'll be back here another day in May & June looking for orchids and butterflies.
The views over Lydden and Stonehall were fantastic in the light. We admired the row of Scots Pines as well before joining the Coldred Hill and crossed the A2 before heading to the Carpenters, where naturally we had a splendid evening with the usual suspects.
