Broward County alone has thousands of miles of sidewalks. And according to the State of Florida’s Statutes, riding a bicycle on sidewalks in the State of Florida is legal – that is as long as cyclists yield to pedestrians and use common sense - and as long as a particular municipality doesn’t consider the mixture of pedestrians and bicyclists to be unsafe – such as sidewalks in a crowded downtown area with sidewalk cafes, etc.
The City of Fort Lauderdale single-handedly has 325 miles of sidewalks as well as 500 miles of roads. That’s a lot of surfaces to maintain.
Only on rare occasions do I have to ride my bicycle on a Broward County roadway to reach my destinations. The same is true when I go out for a casual bike ride with no destination in mind. I’m amazed at how easy and safe it is to ride from point A to point B in Broward County using nothing buy sidewalks and bike paths.
I have found the above to be true mainly because I choose not to get caught up in this area’s passion for bicycling speed. I’m never going to break any world speed record while riding my bikes and neither are all of you, so why not slow it down, ride off road, stop tailgating your wheel-mates in pace lines, smell the roses, and spare your families the worry that some brain-dead scofflaw in a motorcar will run you down – or - your well-meaning wheel-mates will crash into you.
Just sayin’

Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
