It’s not every day that you witness a car/truck break-in while out bicycling. Today was my day! I actually saw the thief break out the passenger side front window, reach in and grab something, and then skedaddle the hell out of the park – all while I was on my phone calling the police. The entire ordeal happened in about 30 seconds.
Unfortunately, the scofflaw got away mainly because police dispatch asked too many questions before actually dispatching a police officer. It happened in a park with only one exit/entrance, so if we could have had an officer in the area, quite possibly we could have caught the desperado.
As it was, the truck’s owner, a female bicyclist, left her purse on the front seat when out bicycling with friends. I know this because I stuck around until the police and victim arrived. She was justifiably distraught knowing that someone just stole her purse containing her DL and credit cards.
Another crime of opportunity occurred all because some dimwit leaves her valuables in clear view. When will people learn!?
Anyway, today’s bike ride was November’s US Road Cycling 50-Miler. It was probably one of the easiest 50-milers this year – and I used my mountain-bike instead of the lighter and faster road-bike.
