Sonja and I went over to Buellton for the California TRiple Crown Spring Solvang ride. It is officially 191 miles. We stayed at Sideways Inn. Yes I upgraded the quality of room as Sonja was staying there while I was out cycling.
I rode from the hotel to the start line, 0.7 miles, and Deb Bowling kicked us off at 4:54am. There was a group of about 20-25 riders mostly Adobo Velo. Jhune, a West Valley Cycle guy was there with them.
It was foggy at the start and continued with fog until about mile 80. Wore gloves, Bull Vest ,and orange wind breaker. Took off the jacket at the first SAG, about mile 38. Saw Mike S there for a couple minutes before he took off. I started from that SAG without gloves, but had to put them back on.
The gloves were very helpful as windshield wipers for my glasses, used about every 1-2 miles. Ugh.
To get to that first SAG, had to clear the 2 hills on Foxen Canyon. No challenge. The first 1 was still in the dark, but it started to get light for the second climb. There were 3 of us on those 2 climbs.
Leaving SAG 1 I was solo and spent the rest of the day mostly solo. I would combine with 2 other riders off and on the rest of the day, mostly solo.
Started to get slower and slower after lunch as I was wanting to enjoy the sites more.
The entrance to Pismo Beach and the climb out of it was stunning.
Back at Guadalupe SAG, there were 3 of us. I snagged a PBJ and some pocket food, water and was off. Enjoyed an awesome tailwind from Guadalupe over to Los Alamos! That was the first time I recall having a tailwind in this section.
At Los Alamos, I had a cup o'noodles so I spent a few extra minutes here before heading out. I opted to use the freeway instead of the bumpy road through the vineyard to get to Los Olisos Canyon Rd. The climb up that canyon and then Foxen Canyon was wonderful.
Then the last climb up Ballard Cnyn, a snaky twisty fun climb. This road was very bumpy, the worst road of all. Yet I was over joyed to realize I would easily finish before sunset! Another 1st for me!
After reviewing my earlier Solvang Spr rides, this speed was about average yet I did not use Mike or any other rider for a long period of drafting. So I will stay with my statement that this was a strong ride for me, mostly solo. Past years, I followed Mke for many miles.
