Sunday. Chris Kinsey takes the lead for today's long ride, followed by Tim Oakley, Iain MacDonald and myself. Out through Uxbridge Common and Ickenham, we follow a very interesting route through Ruislip, Eastcote Village and Northwood, to our refreshment stop at Rickmansworth Golf Club. Already seated are Dave Peck and Liliane. To entertain us Dave gives us a mathematical puzzle. "Oh no" I think, maths not being my strong point; however, the answer eludes everyone.
After tea/coffee and "the answer", we are on our way again, via Rickmansworth, Croxley Green and Sarratt, we descend into the Chess valley at Latimer, and trundle our way to our lunch stop at The Queens Head at Chesham. I've never been there before, an old fashioned country style pub that doesn't charge the earth for food. Great!
Chris has been having problems with the front changer on his bike, the temporary gaffer tape solution not proving durable enough. So on the way back his chain wraps itself securely round the pedal. With much difficulty it is freed and gives no more trouble probably due to Chris's now more relaxed pace. Back at Latimer, we ascend Stoney Lane most of us on foot. We were going to stop at a pub in Herons Gate, but time is against us so we proceed along a muddy track to the N Orbital. The group splits at Coppermill Lane, with Chris and I going up to Harefield. Iain and Tim go straight on to Denham/Uxbridge. Chris leaves me somewhere along Breakspear Rd and I return by the outward route through Ickenham. At Swakeleys Drive I see a familiar form, Tim. I give chase and we both head up Long Lane. Tim goes straight ahead, while I renew my acquaintance with RAF Northolt via the A40 cycle track.
A pleasant dry day for a change.
Regards Bernie
