The ride covered 40.1 km with 983 m of ascent and 988 m of descent, set along a rolling basin loop with repeated short climbs and linked descents across the Apokoronas interior. Moving time totalled 2:24:54, with an ascent time of 1:30:28 and descent in 0:54:26. Gradients reached +23.2% on the steeper sections and –16.5% on the descents. Maximum speed recorded was 55.0 km/h, averaging 16.6 km/h across tarmac transitions, gravel tracks, loose stone, hardpack, exposed rock, and uneven agricultural surfaces, with approximately 50% off-road. It was a winding, segmented route — sustained effort through repeated climbs with no single dominant ascent.
I left Kokkino Chorio at 08:00, taking the tarmac climb up toward Drapanos continuing toward Xirosterni for the 08:30 pick-up. The early section was controlled and steady, gaining elevation on road before transitioning onto mixed surface.
From Litsarda, the route moved onto agricultural tracks and gravel lines, heading toward the Koiliaris Ridge before dropping into the Koiliaris basin. The terrain here is open but structured — fields, terraces, and defined track systems linking villages. Surface conditions varied between compacted hardpack and loose stone, with exposed rock and limestone slabs in places where runoff and use had removed the top layer.
The route dropped and rose across seven climbs and six descents. None were individually decisive, but the cumulative load was constant. The steepest sections required controlled power delivery, particularly where loose gravel sat over a hard base and there were run ruts. Short technical sections forced line choice, especially where embedded rock broke traction.
As the route approached the basin floor, movement aligned with the Koliaris River corridor. The ground opened out, gradients eased, and track width increased. This is terrain that supports movement — not unrestricted, but structured and predictable.
We stopped for coffee and cake at the cheese shop in Vryses.
After coffee, the return leg followed the basin edge before climbing back out through a series of stepped ascents. The terrain reverted to mixed agricultural track and gravel, with repeated transitions requiring constant adjustment. The final section closed the loop back through Vamos, Hospital Track, Xerosterni toward Kokkino Chorio.
As the route followed the Kiliaris River line, the ground presented itself as a movement corridor that has been used repeatedly under different conditions of control.
During the German occupation of Crete (1941–1945), this basin formed part of the wider operational environment linking the north coast to the interior. It was not a fixed defensive position or a defined front. It was a transit zone.
German forces relied on the same features visible today: road access from the coast, track networks between villages, and the ability to move along the river valley. Patrols, supply movements, and local security operations followed these lines. Control was exercised through presence on key routes and within settlements such as Vryses, Armeni, and Stylos.
However, that control was limited by the structure of the ground.
Movement away from established routes reduced speed immediately. Vehicles were confined to roads and wider tracks. Dismounted troops could move more freely, but only at reduced pace and with limited visibility across broken terrain, terraces, and vegetation. This created predictable patterns: control along routes, uncertainty beyond them.
Resistance activity operated within the same framework. The basin did not provide the depth of concealment found in the Lefka Ori, but it enabled movement between areas. Small groups could pass through using agricultural tracks, terraces, and seasonal cover. Movement was timed and localised, often using knowledge of patrol patterns and ground conditions.
The villages themselves formed part of this system. They acted as nodes — points of rest, supply, and information exchange. The density of settlement in Apokoronas allowed movement to be staged in short phases rather than extended exposure across open ground.
German responses followed a familiar pattern seen elsewhere on the island. Where resistance activity was identified, reprisals were applied at village level. Arrests, destruction of property, and enforcement measures were used to disrupt support networks. These actions were effective where access was immediate and force could be concentrated. They were less effective where terrain limited rapid response or where information was incomplete.
This pattern aligns directly with earlier periods.
Under Venetian and Ottoman rule, the same basin functioned as a zone of relative control. It could be reached, administered, and taxed because movement was possible along defined lines. The Egyptian administration formalised this further in the 1830s through measurement and census. The ground was recorded, its population counted, and its economic value fixed.
What changes in the twentieth century is not the terrain, but its operational use.
The same routes that allowed administration in the nineteenth century allowed military movement in the twentieth. The same villages that were counted and taxed became part of a network supporting both occupation and resistance. The same limitations applied: control was strongest where movement was easiest, and weakest where terrain imposed delay and uncertainty.
The Kiliaris basin therefore represents a consistent type of ground across time. It is neither fully secure nor fully resistant. It is usable, but conditional. It allows movement, but not without constraint. It supports control, but does not guarantee it.
Riding through the basin today, that structure remains unchanged. Movement is efficient along established routes, but quickly restricted beyond them. The terrain dictates the terms.
The land has not changed.
Only the forces moving across it.

Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
