The ride covered 36.8 km with 830 m of ascent and 830 m of descent, set along a rolling loop with repeated short climbs and linked descents. Moving time totalled 2:19:05, with an ascent time of 1:10:36 and descent in 0:57:41. Gradients reached +15.7% on the steeper sections and –19.9% on the descents. Maximum speed recorded was 50.7 km/h, averaging 15.9 km/h across tarmac transitions, wet farm tracks, compacted dirt, loose gravel, and exposed limestone, with approximately 70% off-road. It was a winding, segmented route — multiple efforts linked by short recovery sections, with no single dominant climb.
I left Kokkino Chorio at 09:30 and headed—on tarmac—the short distance to Kambia. There I did the descent of Four Hill Climb. Still wet and muddy. Another short stretch of tarmac, and I dropped into the Aspro Tracks, taking the segment known as St. Basil’s Track to Gavalochori, where I met two other riders.
Thereafter, we entered the Roller Coaster, still wet and muddy with standing water and multiple puddles. The surface was unstable in places, with soft sections over a hard base and exposed rock where runoff had stripped the top layer. This was followed by the Olive Grove and the off-road climb to Προφήτης Ηλίας (Prophet Elijah Church). From there we tackled Tsivaras Climb, Water Tower Hill, and the descent of Armeni Springs Climb.
We stopped for coffee and cake at Kiosky in Armeni. Over coffee, we were talking about building. One of the riders is in the process of building a garage and explained how the blocks are laid, how they overlap, and how their placement gives the structure its strength. My background is different, and I am not a DIY person, but the explanation was clear. It was not about the individual block, but how each one is placed in relation to the next.
On the return half of the ride, that stayed with me.
We then followed the undulating Koiliaris River route, looping above Kalyves, before rejoining the Olive Grove Track. From there it was back onto the Aspro Tracks and the final ascent of Four Hill Climb through Kambia, returning to Kokkino Chorio.
Moving across the same wet ground—track, stone, and standing water—I found the comparison holding. A mandináδα is built in the same way. It is constrained, structured, and dependent on correct placement. The first line sets the direction; the second must align and complete it. Like a wall, the strength is not in the individual part, but in how the parts are joined.
Today’s mandináδα reflects that.

The structure is the same: fixed form, controlled placement, and strength through alignment.
Picture 1: JUNCTION – OLIVE GROVE TRACK TO PROPHET ELIJAH CLIMB
This point marks a clear transition in both terrain and effort. The Olive Grove Track approaches on a compacted earth surface, relatively consistent under tyre, with embedded stone providing predictable traction. Gradient is low, allowing steady forward progress without excessive load on the drivetrain.
Ahead, the character changes.
The off-road climb toward Prophet Elijah begins immediately beyond this junction. The surface narrows and becomes more irregular, with increased stone exposure and less uniform compaction. The gradient builds in stages rather than a single rise, requiring repeated application of power rather than a sustained cadence.
The Olive Grove Track itself shows signs of light erosion, with minor displacement of gravel toward the margins and occasional shallow depressions along the centre line. However, it remains rideable at pace and offers a stable platform for positioning before the climb.
This junction should be used to prepare.
- Select gear before entering the climb; shifting under load will be compromised on the initial incline.
- Establish line early; the entry section determines momentum for the first pitch.
- Manage cadence to avoid early fatigue; the climb develops progressively.
Vegetation closes slightly as the route turns upward, reducing lateral space and limiting alternative lines. Olive trees remain present along the lower section, with scrub and low growth increasing further up the slope.
This is not a technical feature in isolation, but it is a decision point. The rider moves from a stable approach track into a variable, energy-demanding climb where surface and gradient begin to work together rather than independently.
Execution from this point determines how efficiently the next section is cleared.
Picture 2: OLIVE GROVE TRACK – NARROW VEGETATED SECTION
This section represents a marked change from open gravel track to confined, vegetation-dominated corridor. The route narrows to a twin line with a central grass strip, indicating consistent but low-impact use over time.
Surface conditions are mixed. Beneath the grass and top layer lies compacted soil with intermittent embedded stone. The visible lines on either side show slight rutting where tyres and foot traffic have displaced material. Moisture retention is high due to shading and dense vegetation, resulting in a softer, less predictable surface under load.
Vegetation encroachment is significant.
Tall reeds and grasses overhang the track, reducing width and restricting rider movement. In places, stems bend across the line, creating partial obstructions at handlebar height. The right-hand boundary is defined by dense shrub growth and a simple wire fence, limiting escape options.
This creates a controlled, single-line environment.
Riding considerations:
- Maintain a central line; deviation into the margins risks pedal strike and loss of balance due to uneven ground.
- Expect reduced traction; grass over compacted soil can be slippery, particularly when damp.
- Manage speed; visibility ahead is limited by vegetation and track curvature.
- Protect hands and arms; overhanging reeds and branches can obstruct or deflect the rider.
The twin-track formation suggests historical use by foot and light agricultural movement rather than vehicles. The persistence of the line indicates continuity of access, even as surrounding vegetation has reclaimed the wider space.
This is a transition section. It reduces pace, increases focus, and shifts the rider from open terrain into a more enclosed and reactive riding environment.
Picture 3: THE ROLLER COASTER – SHEPHERD AND FLOCK
The climb was interrupted by movement ahead. A flock, estimated at over three hundred sheep, was being driven across the track. The shepherd stood to one side, controlling the flow with measured calls and position rather than force. The animals moved steadily, filling the width of the track and spilling onto the margins where the ground allowed.
I stopped and waited.
We spoke briefly. He recognised me and said he often saw me riding these tracks. He told me he first walked them as a child, at five years old. That places his knowledge of this ground across decades, not seasons.
He also gave a clear warning. The ground, he said, is wetter than in previous years. That assessment aligns with current conditions observed across the route: saturated soil over hardpack, reduced cohesion in gravel sections, and increased surface instability on slopes and in rutted areas.
The flock continued to pass. Lambs moved close to the ewes, with occasional hesitation at uneven ground and exposed stone. The track surface showed compression under hooves, particularly where moisture had softened the upper layer.
Once the crossing was complete, I moved on. I thanked him for the advice; he thanked me for waiting.
This interaction reflects continued shared use of the track network. These routes are not recreational constructs. They are working corridors, used daily for livestock movement and land access. Rider behaviour must account for this.
Operational note:
- Always stop for livestock movement.
- Maintain distance; avoid sudden movement or noise.
- Expect surface degradation after herd passage, particularly in wet conditions.
- Local knowledge, especially from shepherds, is reliable and should be treated as current ground intelligence.
The route continues, but the condition has changed. The warning stands.

Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
