It was just 30 miles to the ferry port of Oma and the ferry was at 13:40, so I hit the road at 9am with a plan to cover a liesurely 10 miles per hour and arrive at the port at Noon.
The first 5 miles I went north over the headland to the coast which I then followed North West to Oma. I followed a small town called Ohata which was basically a two mile long street with little houses on either side hanging on to the edge of the land. I stopped and got my first glimpse of Hokkaido which reminded me I needed to write a Haiku for Honshu.
There was a small harbour and then road road crossed a bridge and went up for my only real climb of the day.
As I reached Kazamaura I saw a lady who appeared to be putting her washing out, as I got closer I saw her cutting it .... Strange ?
As I went past I saw the washing hanging on the line was actually an Octopus and she was butcheri g it into a basket.
The coast was beautiful, rocky with a calm sea and a bright clear day. I was stopping frequently ... A shrine built on a Rock Pool wofh a Godzilla shaped lava rock, wooden carvings, harbours with fishing boats ... It was glorious.
I was watching the time however. 10miles at 10am, 20miles at 11am ... I arrived at the Ferry Port at 11:59 !
I then had to fill a form in just to buy a ticket which took 20 minutes which lefy just enough time to head 2 miles North to Omazaki ... The most northerly point on the whole Island of Honshu - I took photos and posted a video and I re ited my Haiku .....
"Honshu, the Big One
I have cycled your length
And Now Hokkaido"
The bicycles boarded first, there was only me and a Japanese lad - we walked on and werer ushered to a space at the back with two towels on the floor, not knowing what to do the workman took my bike and laid it down on the towel .... Only in Japan!
On the ferry a guy was feeding the gulls which were catching the boat and eating out of his hand - I managed some great close ups as the passed me.
So Honshu is complete and everyone says Hokkaido is best for cycling - Im running out of miles left on this epic journey so lets hope for safe travel, good weather and beautiful scenery ... Bring on Hokkaido !
Post script tonight I took the ropeway up to the viewpoi t overlooking Hakodate and got sone great photos - I passex an English Bar on the way back and called in and it had a Geordie Corner full of Toon memorabilia ... who'd have thought it in Hakodate !
