Today I started the Wine Country Century at 6:30 a.m., and I finished at about 5 p.m. it felt really good. All that prep and good advice from the Santa Cruz Club members really paid off! I never felt like I was running out of energy, or that the hills were too hard.
But I regret I can't say I rode the Wine Country Century.
Yes, I rode 109 miles today, and climbed 5.6K feet. And, yes, I rode a lot of that on this year's Wine Country Century route. But not all of it.
That's because I got the route from the 2026 Wine Country Century Event on RideWithGPS, rather than the Wine Country Century web site. The route on the RideWithGPS event page didn't include the change to avoid crossing a closed historic bridge. And that change made this year's ride 20 miles shorter to that bridge.
So by the time I got to the bridge, and then rode the 7 mile detour to the correct route on the other side of the bridge, I had covered 57 miles, about 20 miles farther than the rest of the century riders, and climbed 1,200 feet more! And on the correct route, I still had 60 miles to go.
At first, I felt very disappointed that I wouldn't be able to complete the century as planned (99 miles and 4.7K feet). But later in the ride, my disappointment was eased by committing to a slightly bigger century and solving the routing issues with only my own wits and the maps already on my phone, since there was no mobile data up there.
Rather than ride 120 miles, I used a bit of the metric century route to cut off the century's loop from Lake Sonoma up to Cloverdale, a net reduction of about 11 miles.
The rest of the ride went smoothly. It's a significant ride for me, and I'm very pleased that it turned out to be within my capability. I look forward to the other centuries I have planned for the summer, and to 600 miles in 13 days on the Erie Canal and Hudson River tours in July and August!
