The ride covered 31.3 km with 671 m ascent and 674 m descent. Moving time was 2:08:47, with 1:14:05 ascent time and 0:46:41 descent time. Gradients reached +21.8% and –17.6%. Maximum speed was 55.0 km/h, with an average speed of 14.6 km/h. The route was 60% off-road, using compacted gravel, loose limestone, embedded rock, forest track, short tarmac connectors, and a final tarmac descent from Drapanos to Kokkino Chorio.

Route Narrative
We departed Kokkino Chorio at 10:00, moving off the coastal edge onto transitional ground linking short tarmac sections with agricultural track. The opening kilometres were functional, with short undulations across compacted gravel and limestone, passing through working olive ground and local access tracks.
The early climbs, C1 to C3, established the ride structure. These were short, stepped efforts with irregular gradients requiring controlled cadence and torque. The surface remained stable, mainly compacted gravel and embedded stone.
The mid-sector, C4 to C6, marked the transition into sustained effort. C4 delivered the steepest gradient of the ride at +18.1%, a short but decisive climb requiring full commitment. From this point the terrain tightened, the track narrowed, and surface variability increased.
The Enchanted Forest
The section referred to as the Enchanted Forest lies within the wooded belt between Gavalohori, Douliana, and toward Vamos. This is a modern descriptive term, not a formal historical name.
The ground is mixed oak and cypress woodland, with dense canopy, reduced visibility, narrow agricultural tracks, broken sight lines, and multiple route options. Under the wheels the surface was mixed soil, embedded stone, loose limestone, and leaf-covered irregularities.
During the German occupation of Crete, SOE Force 133 relied on terrain of this type for movement and concealment. Woodland and broken agricultural track systems reduced visibility, avoided main roads, and allowed movement between villages and upland routes. There is no confirmed single SOE operation tied to this exact forest block, but the ground is consistent with the type of terrain used for courier movement, liaison, concealment, and movement toward the Lefka Ori and Sfakia routes.
Climbs C6 to C8 sat within or on the margins of this wooded ground. This was not extreme riding, but it required precision: controlled braking, careful line choice, and steady power over concealed stone and uneven surfaces.
The final structured effort was C9: 0.7 km at 6.1%, lifting the route to approximately 340 m. From there the ride moved into the descent phase.
The final descent was tarmac from Drapanos to Kokkino Chorio. Surface quality allowed controlled speed, reflected in the recorded maximum speed of 55.0 km/h. The loop closed directly back at Kokkino Chorio.
Summary Assessment
Route Type: Stepped rolling circuit with defined climb structure and direct descent
Terrain: Agricultural track, forest track, limestone surface, gravel, short tarmac connectors, final tarmac descent
Technical Demand: Moderate to high due to gradients, surface change, and woodland navigation
Historical Value: High — terrain consistent with SOE movement methodology in Apokoronas
A structured ride through working ground, woodland cover, and historically relevant movement terrain.

Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
