I woke up from my beach campsite after a big long sleep, probably about 10 hours! The stars were gorgeous that night. I had to make my way out of the coast there over a hill but it was quite nice being on the back roads.
On this route I was able to detour a lot off the main highway, which turned out to be the perfect decision because not only did I get to dodge the tunnels and stay along the water, the views were some of the most gorgeous I'd seen so far on my trip.
The waters on the way to Hagi from Nagato were crystal clear, I have never seen such clear water in my life. There was also a railway that ran along the coast, so there were many beautiful sights where the railway met the sea. At one point I was taking a big long detour over a mountain along the coast but there were cones and barriers blocking the road, however it was cleared about 1m across so bikes and motorbikes could easily go through. I assumed it was blocked only for cars. The road was full of sticks and leaves that had fallen onto to it, and after a few kms and a big climb I ran into a chain that was along the whole road blocking the other side. Turns out it must've just been blocked off in general, I'm glad I didn't realise till I was already done because I got to cycle it, which would've been a much better choice than the tunnel filled inland highways!
My last supermarket stop I got some food and was sitting eating it when another hawk tried to swipe my food, this time though he was nowhere near as close as the last one that actually grazed my hand. I stared him down as he continued to circle around me while I ate. He tried again a bit later but was even further off, I finished my food without a single bit getting stolen from the bird.
At the 90km point I hit an absolute wall and rocked up to my campsite, which was a cheap campsite next to an onsen. However, it turns out they were closed on Mondays and today was in fact Monday. So I went back to my original plan after a brief stop at Lawson to grab my dinner. I continued on my path over another decent hill that at this point was absolutely destroying me. The moment I hit 100km for the first time was right in the middle of a beautiful bridge, with water views over the train line. My favourite! I got to my campsite and had enough time for a dip in the beach and a rinse under the taps. I set up camp among wildflowers, got a peach tea from the vending machine and watched the sunrise. Great day.
Side note, I also didn't walk once this entire day. A true 100kms cycled! I also hit my elevation gain record.
