We were all going to meet at Harmony Ridge Market (which is where we started from yesterday as well). I heard they had great food so I got there early to get a breakfast burrito first and it was indeed great.
It was the full crew today: Theresa, Allen, Rich, Steve, Sam, Patrick, and Charlie.
The weather was a cooler than yesterday and just perfect (as were the trails).
We started with Hoot Trail again and I got to say, it's probably my overall favorite trail there. Scotts Flat is probably the best trail but getting back to the top after isn't the best whereas the return from Hoot is much shorter. That said, I would kill for the return climb at Demo to be as gradual as either of Hoot's or Scotts Flat's.
After Hoot, most of us rode over to Parliament via Cheeseburger Trail while Rich and Allen drove a car over so we'd have water.
On the way over, there's a fork in the trail - to the left is Cheeseburger and to the right is Nuthatch. Sam and Theresa took the correct way while I took everyone else on Nuthatch. We were unsure at the time whether they reconnected so we decided to go back and take Cheeseburger instead.
While we were doing this, Sam saw that they did connect and decided to bushwhack to meet up with us on Nuthatch. Theresa had no idea he'd done this and kept going trying to catch him.
We all got to the top of the DH trails but no Sam. In his bushwhacking attempt to meet us, he lost the head unit for his eMTB. Without it, the motor won't turn on so he was stuck with a 50lb analog workout bike. He spent the entire two hours that we were lapping Parliament looking for the head unit.
We did Talon Show, Shimmer, and then PermaGrin Falcon which progress from blue to black. All the DH trails are one way only with a single trail, Unkindness, that you take back up. All the trails funnel into it.
I thought all the trails were amazing and somehow found PermaGrin to be easier than Shimmer. There was an easier route for all the features on Talon Show and Shimmer. The most difficult features on PermaGrin had alt routes but a lot of the small jumps that you boost off of you just had to roll them if you didn't want to jump them.
I think Shimmer felt harder because of how many and the way the boost jumps were setup, if you didn't jump them, you lost a lot of speed and had to pedal more than on PermaGrin.
Even Unkindness is a better way to get back to the top than at Demo.
It was around lunchtime when we finished the three laps. We decided to head back to Harmony Ridge Market to get sandwiches but a bunch of us decided to go find Sam and help him find his head unit.
Like Theresa, we went past him and didn't see him. We didn't know to look so far off the trail. Sam had given up and rode to meet us but we convinced him that we could find it so we all headed back to the area he thought he'd lost it. We spent ~20min. fanning out and looking for it with no luck.
While we were there, Rich had gone to the bike shop behind the market and they actually had a head unit. They gave it to Sam and unfortunately couldn't get it to pair without special equipment from an authorized Bosch/Trek dealer.
The sandwiches were also really good. I got Bertha's Best, which was a meatloaf sandwich. Very filling.
Steve ended up letting Sam borrow his analog MTB, that he rode yesterday with me, for the afternoon session.
After lunch, I wanted to do Hoot, Scotts Flat, Hoot, Hoot but Theresa wanted to save Hoot for the end so we ended up skipping the first Hoot lap.
Scotts Flat the second time was even better. It's so much fun. Instead of doing the extra loop at the end like Steve and I did yesterday, we took the trail to the left and it goes directly to the road. So for future reference, do the extra loop to the left. It's way more fun.
Steve was offering a tow up from Scotts Flat. There was a bidding war between Theresa and Patrick and Theresa ended up winning.
Earlier, Theresa had mentioned she doesn't like random people riding on her wheel or near her and off course Allen took the opportunity to mess with her by bumping her back wheel. And on the climb, Steve and Theresa (in tow), tried to get away from Allen but he was also on an eMTB without towing anyone so of course he's going to be able to keep up. I was actually keeping up with them on the flat but once it really started to go up, I noped out. That left me in no-man's land climbing by myself which made it feel longer than yesterday.
After the first lap of Hoot after Scotts Flat, a lot of people were tired and done but I wanted to at least one more lap of Hoot. Allen, Theresa, and Steve were up for it. The previous laps, we were stopping to take photos and this lap, we just did a full run, top to bottom. Man was it fun and I was pretty stoked to keep up with the eMTBs the whole way down.
Today was actually a good test as three people were on eMTBs: Allen, Steve, and Sam. I was curious how that would be. In terms of pace, I ended up riding more with the eMTBs than the analog riders.
