I woke up before sunrise to get a nice time-lapse and to give me some time in the morning to work on my bike. I used the stuff I bought the day before to clean my bikes disc brakes. At about 7:00 I left my campsite and headed towards Onomichi. I had posted on Facebook and on a travel app to meet me at 7:30 in the morning at a cafe to cycle the shimanami kaido together. However, nobody turned up. It was great coffee though!
The first bridge of the shimonami kaido was nothing special there wasn't even a cycle lane despite its reputation for being an amazing cycle area. But as I explored the islands and the towns it got apparent why this is such a famous route. The support for cycling is pretty insane, once I got further in there was cycle signs and cycle lanes everywhere. I stopped at a cafe that sold ice cream for a quick ice cream float and then got another flavor just on its own. As you can see on the root I even went to a little island that was off the beaten track just to loop it and see what it was like.
There were cyclists everywhere but I got a tip from some people on Facebook that told me to not stick to the cycle routes and to make sure I explore it properly. So I did what I do best and found a route that took me up a hill that I assume not many other people would have been willing to do. At the top I got a panoramic view of the island and the nearby islands and bridges, and I had a nice conversation with a local.
After that climb, I caught across the island back to the other side just to make sure I can explore some more of the coast. However, by this point I started to get really hungry and tired. I spent way too long eating at Lawson, and then the path along the coast just kept going up and down and taking the energy out of me. I was really hitting a wall and was still far off my goals, with about 3-4h left of light. On the road I found a guy practicing the saxophone at a beautiful lookout, so I stopped and relaxed while listening to him. It was like an angel had come to calm me down.
I kept going and with a brief stop at Macca's and a supermarket, the sun was really starting to go down. Not only was I not near my I tended goal, I didn't even have a campsite in mind. I just decided to stick with it and keep going. My idea was to get to this island that not many people would go to, assuming it's less busy and I can find somewhere to just pitch my tent away from a town. I kept pushing and made it to the island, once again going up and down around the perimeter of this island. At exactly sunset I found a spot to pull over by the beach that was hidden from the road. Because of course, the road will provide.
