Today marks 2 months that I've been on this trip!
I woke up at 3:50am and felt well rested so stayed up. After packing my things I had a vending machine coffee from the nearby town and got back on the road. First stop was the only conveniences store I'd see today 35km away.
There were lots of little tunnels and river views along the way. At one point I stopped for a small walk across a suspension bridge and into the forest just to check it out. I would've loved to keep going but I had no idea how far in the hike went so once I say a cool rickety old bridge I just turned around.
I got to Mira Konbini (which means future convenience store) and got some snacks and a coffee. I then proceeded to knock my coffee over and spill it everywhere, so I got another one after cleaning up. At the Konbini I charged my things and chilled out for about an hour. I left at 11:30 to head towards the mountain pass that was the main event of the day.
To put it simply, the top of this mountain was over 1000m above sea level, the highest I've been on my bike. I walked probably most of it to be honest. But the views were absolutely stunning. It seems that Shikoku has some of the most sheer mountain faces I've ever seen, but still with trees going up the side.
Towards the top I saw a wild snow monkey who looked at me then ran off. This mountain was also in bear territory, so I was hyper aware of that. There are only about 20 bears in Shikoku, but I'm pretty sure they mostly love around those mountains as the only reported bear sightings in the past month was around there. That being said, I didn't see any at all. There were also loads of waterfalls which was cool.
I'm at a paid campsite tonight, only ¥1000 though. It's got running water and showers. Today might've been one of my hardest days I've done, it was definitely the tallest climb I've done.
LOOK AT THAT ELEVATION GAIN. I have NEVER done over 2000m in a day and I just did 2600m 😱😱😱
