I slept in a little in my hostel, as the typhoon roaring the night before kept me from going to med until midnight. It was insane, basically just torrential rains and winds, but the stuff that makes you giggle when you run through it. The day before I'd spent just 'resting', which involved eating so much chocolate that I felt sick for the next 8 hours and watching Philosophy Tube. I also saw a job listing for a Doc editor in Canberra so I edited in my bed at 10pm, trying to figure out how to make a showreel.
I said goodbye to the Finnish guy who was finishing his pilgrimage and I headed to the port. On the way there I sat for a coffee and some more editing at a swanky cafe. I made the ferry with 4 minutes to spare (I had not checked the timetable at all). The ferry line has a stop over at Naoshima island where you have to change (btw saying island after anything with 'shima' seems pointless because Shima literally means island). It turns out that the next ferry wasn't for another 1.5 hours so I cycled to the other side of the small island for lunch. They had a gluten free vegetarian hot dog that was genuinely amazing. Maybe I was just excited to be having some gf bread again.
On the second ferry I called the closest free campsite and they said it wasn't available. Great! Because the ferry trip was so slow, I couldn't make it to my original camping plan. So I decided to go with the true original route and cycling west towards Kojima before heading east again. There were no campsites, but there was a carpark that looked pretty isolated with some toilets.
I got there around 7 and set up my tent. Nestled inside my little tarp home, some noises started rustling near me. A home I wasn't aware of and there were people nearby? No, maps said other wise. But I head no animal sounds, only steps. Eventually too curious, I had to look. I shine my light and sure enough there was an animal 10 meters away, foraging the undergrowth. A Tanuki maybe? A closer look proved my worries.
IT WAS ANOTHER GODDAMN BOAR.
For some context, boars are generally harmless in temperament. But they are heavy bastards with tusks, and if they get territorial they can do some serious damage. This particular boar was not scared of me at all. No no, he was quite curious. He walked towards me. I stepped backwards. I thought fuck this. I took the pegs out of my tent and carried the whole things, bags inside and all, away.
Now, realistically I could have just moved my tent further away and gone to sleep. But to be honest, I was already not feeling the stealth camping before I even got off the ferry. So I had a brilliant idea, to google nearby internet cafes. And sure enough, there was one a 10 minute cycle away. I set up my membership there and got a 9 hour locked fully private room for $25. And some takeout from Gusto nearby, because of course I did. I deserve nice things after all.
