This was the Columbia Challenge Metric Century. Haven't done this route in a couple of years. Start from Ranier City Park along the Columbia River. The first 3.5 miles is all climbing and fairly steep. A lot of 8-10% grades and 1150 feet total. A nice downhill on Brownlee Rd to Beaver Springs Rd. Several rollers on Fern Hill Rd to Apiary Rd. Expected the first aid station at the turnout for Schaffer Rd and the start of the Camp Wilkerson climb, but there wasn't one. Long, steady climb to Camp Wilkerson (nearly 2600 ft total by now) then a great, long downhill toward the Highway 47 junction. Found out after the ride there was supposed to be an aid station at the junction, but the volunteers were late. Had a snack from my own stash here (mile 27). Nice 7-mile spin into Mist. Saw a CCC aid station sign at the Highway 47/202 junction and thought it might be at the Mist School. Nope. A long, grueling 5-mile climb to the Mist Summit then a real long downhill into Clatskanie. Finally an actual aid station at the Clatskanie Skatepark (mile 46.8). A nice flat section along the Clatskanie River then another long climb on Swedetown Rd paralleling Keystone Creek. To add insult to injury, the route veered left onto Cedar Grove Rd and another long, steep climb. That slog brought the total climbing to around 4700 feet. A lot of downhill to the Highway 30 junction (mile 57.8). A short spin on Highway 30 to Old Ranier Rd. The route deviated from previous versions by going right on Larson Rd instead of straight and by Ranier High School. The new route was also cruel by adding another steep hill on Parkdale Rd. The final 4 miles was downhill into Ranier. Not very impressed with the support. Only a few food options at the aid station and ended up with one less stop than advertised.
