There was a big debate to settle. Zoe likes China Camp better than Calero. At the time, I didn’t really have a strong opinion because I didn’t remember China Camp that well. I remembered it reminded me of Calero and I thought perhaps the views might give it an edge.
I can now say that Calero is hands down better in every way.
Both parks are pretty but I think Calero edges China Camp out. I think it has a greater variety of scenery too.
China Camp was much rougher than I remember it. Even with my MTB, it felt bumpy. I would say the biggest knock against China Camp is how much you have to pedal to make it fun. At Calero you can be going uphill and it still feels like you’re going down. It’s magical that way.
There were some fun, flowy, parts though. I just wish more of the loop was that way. I need to go back and see if it would be better in the other direction but I don’t think it would really matter.
With all the pedaling, I guess I was working harder than I realized because on the the second lap I started to feel tired after only doing 10+ miles. By the second, return, half of the loop, I shut down and Ant was gone.
I was so far behind, he thought I took a different trail and he rode all the way back to the car. I didn't intend to ride back to the car. I was actually thinking about doing a third lap at a slower pace to see if I would enjoy it more.
I ate a bar and went back. At first I thought I made a mistake. I was even slower than before and feeling a little nauseous. Since you have to pedal for the trails to be fun, coasting them wasn’t much fun at all.
But then towards the halfway mark of the loop, I felt better and was able to pedal again. I guess I had a mini bonk despite eating breakfast and having a bar right before we started the ride. In the end I was glad I went back to the car and took that moment to eat.
I must’ve been really hungry because I wolfed down Sol Food like I was a starving POW when I got lunch.
I’d say an even bigger knock against China Camp is the drive to get there. It takes almost the same amount of time to get there but with the traffic it makes it so frustrating. I end up in such a terrible mood by the time I get to the trailhead. I might have been hangry but just the short drive to food was so congested, slow, and annoying.
