Another good ride. I left at 7:30, earlier than the first two days, to beat some of the heat. I'm still shooting for 7:00! Mostly on the canal towpath, smooth crushed stone. I got some interesting photos of the locks and preserved canal structures. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, at least until Clyde, where the town set up a huge rest stop in the shady town park. Lots of food, ice, music, and a coffee shop nearby, where I got coffee for tomorrow morning. (Zojirushi FTW!) But by the time we reached Clyde, the heat was up to 90, so we were all dreading the rest. I remembered Clyde from my 2023 tour, when I couldn't make it into town. I had to stop maybe 200 yards before the park to pour cold water over my head and rest. I got to Clyde, and i finished the leg, but it was very hard. Today the last 15 miles or so were challenging. Paved, but hot, little shade, and small rolling hills. The highest temp on my bike computer was 93. But I finished the leg without difficulty, so I must be in better shape than three years ago. I saw one rider who had fallen due to dizziness and was lying in the shade next to the road. She had good support, so I hope she was able to get SAGged, rather than an ambulance. After the ride, I spoke to two other riders who chose to get SAGged in that last stretch. Good judgment. I was surprised to feel fine when I arrived, but I was dragging later, on the rising heat, and the work of setting up camp. And washing the trail dust off the bike. See the photos of the frame and drive train! I drank four bottles of water on the ride, and several after arriving. Got some food, and I feel fine now. It'll be a warm night in the tent!
