In Smolyan I stayed at an Airbnb called Апартамент Милена (Apartment Milena) and the couple were so nice to meet me and show me the place! They helped me with the essential coffee and laundry machines. I found a breakfast place but they were remodeling, so I skipped breakfast. I went to have lunch at a restaurant near the apartment and it was satisfactory. They coerced me to give them a review on Google. I went to get groceries and found chocolate, raisins, peanuts, and pumpkin seeds. I asked for dates, and was directed to the fresh produce area. Dates are wonderful for cyclists! Today I crossed from Bulgaria into Greece. I was expecting border control, but the facility was unoccupied since both countries are now in the EU. It was jarring to be riding on a modern highway with tunnels and then transition to an old narrow road to continue my descent. The backcountry of Greece is pretty rudimentary, if you know what I mean. I was glad to leave the busy road at the top of the pass and continue climbing on a quieter road to a small town, then my app (RidewithGPS) directed me onto a dirt road at the town of Kentravos. Then I rode 12 km through tobacco farms and some rough backroads! It was amazing. i’m staying at 916 Mountain Resort.
