Day 2 was another good route. Lots of interesting history, and cute small towns.
I got up at 5 a.m., and I was ready to start by 7:30. But when I got ready, I couldn't find my expensive prescription sunglasses. I spent an hour looking for them. I looked in the tour's lost and found. Then college security gave me a tour of all of their offices that might have collected them overnight. I even made the baggage truck crew dig out my bags. In the end, after all the other riders left, I found them on a picnic table. Apparently someone moved them, but not into list and found!
Cool in the morning, up to 85 after noon. Mostly on road today, mostly quiet back roads. Plus some trails, paved and crushed stone. All smooth except for one short, steep downhill on loose gravel. My Straggler handle that bit well, and if any other riders fell there, they didn't need SAG, at least.
I caught up with a bunch of riders in front of a store in Germantown, where i bought and ate a good pastry.
A little farther on, we entered the Clermont State Historic Site, where the first rest stop was at the former estate of the Livingston family, who migrated from Scotland in the 17th Century. In New York, they "bought" from the Native Americans all of the Catskills (!) and all of today's Columbia County. That's what the decent from Friend of Clermont State Historic Site told me today, but I haven't yet found confirmation of that. The Livingstons also were slaveholders. Their descendants lived in the minors in the preserve until the 1970s, when the last surviving Livingstone left the land to the state of New York.
Then more back roads lined by beautiful homes and estates, some which looked quite old.
And then the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge! We crossed west to Kingston on a narrow path separated from traffic by jersey barriers. A deep drain gate every 50 yards, and the jersey barriers were reinforced with protruding box birders arranged to cause serious injury to inattentive riders. So not fun, but not as bad as CTHV 2023, when we crossed on the unprotected shoulder, also narrow.
Then we bikes through Sojourner Truth State Park, New York's newest state park, to the second rest stop at Hutton Brickyards, 1870-1980, now River Pavilion at Hutton Brickyard, where we camped two nights on CTHV 2023. Right on the Hudson River. Beautiful.
I had forgotten how much I enjoy the old buildings in Kingston. Most of brick, since they had their own brickyard, I guess.
Then we joined the Walkill Valley Trail Trail, great smooth crushed stone. It passes by a historic cement plant, but I haven't found more info on the former railway, the trail, or the plant.
Then a few more miles on road to the campground at SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge.
Tomorrow, Stone Ridge to Carmel, 65 miles.
