Day 5, the last leg of CTHV, went well for me. A little confusing in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, when the tall buildings degraded my GPSs (phone and Wahoo). PTNY's road markings help some, but I'm not the best at watching for them.
I slept well last night, despite the humidity. Woke at 5 a.m., packed up, breakfast and briefing, and ready to go about 7:30, but I took some extra time, since the bus back to Troy from Brooklyn was scheduled to load at 1:30.
I started just before 8 a.m. Immediately, I notice an unfamiliar rattle from the bike. It got worse, so I stopped after about a mile and found one of the 3 mm allen screws attaching the rear rack was missing. And all of those screws were loose, including the spares I carry in unused mount points on the frame and the fork.
Yes, I should have caught that during the preflight inspection. I'll try to do better. And I should have taken the time to use Loc-Tite!
But I was proud of myself for carrying a selection of allen wrenches and spare screws, so I had it fixed in a few minutes.
The tour backtracked to the South County Trailway at the point we left it yesterday. From there, 11 miles to the day's only rest stop, where the trail's name changes to Putnam Greenway in Van Cortlandt Park. Still on the route of the Putnam Division railway.
Van Cortlandt Park is New York City's largest park, created in 1888. PTNY had texted alerts that there were trees down in the park due to last night's storms. We came to the first just before the park, and we were able to lift the bikes over it without leaving the trail.
The second was not as easy. The tree was completely blocking the path. When I got there, riders had already beat a path through the brush on the side of the trail, still with branches and tough vines, but passable.
I helped several riders carry one of the heavy recumbent trikes over the branches. One rider almost fell, tripped by a vine, so I got out my Leatherman and cut away the worst vines.
The rest of the Bronx was uneventful. We crossed the Broadway Bridge to Manhattan, and soon we were on the Hudson Valley Greenway all the way to the Battery. I didn't take a lot of photos, because I took them all on CTHV 2023.
The route went through lower Manhattan before turning back north to the Brooklyn Bridge. Crossing the bridge on a bike is no fun, really. No views. No place to stop. Lots of oncoming bikes.
Some nice views from Brooklyn. Then to the finish at Strong Rope Brewery Red Hook, overseen by Lady Liberty. I had a couple of refreshing fizzy lemonades and two shrimp tacos from the taco truck.
I'm writing this in the bus back to Troy. I'm glad I finished another challenging tour, with amazing support from PTNY!
