A relaxing, short, easy route for the next to last day of CTHV. I'm now at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, tonight's campground. I'm writing this in the evening, in one of the school's air conditioned buildings waiting for a severe thunderstorm to pass before I go back to my tent for the night.
There was no rain on the route today, but very hot, up to 86, and humid, over 80. That's very tiring, so I was glad it was a short day, and glad for the thick tree cover on the rail trails we rode today.
From Carmel's Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park, we backtracked through Carmel to rejoin the Putnam Trailway at the point we left it yesterday. At about 10 miles, the trail continues as Westchester County's North County Trailway, following the same historic railway route.
The first rest stop was at 16 miles, the Yorktown fire station. Then back on the Trailway, which soon paralleled the Taconic State Parkway, then the Saw Mill River Parkway. We could hear the traffic, but the cars were mostly hidden by the narrow line of dense trees between.
The second rest stop was at 31 miles, in a trailhead parking lot just past the junction with a trail that leads to the Tappan Zee Bridge. PTNY suggested we might ride over the bridge as an unsupported side trip. I almost decided to do it, but the heat was getting to me.
The rest stop was shady and pleasant. I stayed longer than usual, no rush with only eight miles to go. Many of the riders there were staying because we knew the campground showers wouldn't be available until 2 p.m., and we didn't know how comfortable the campground would be.
I left before most of the riders. The trail continued, but changed it's name to the South County Parkway.
At 38 miles, I left the trail and climbed up to The Masters School. The first bit of the climb was very steep, then it was a mild climb, then I walked, at the school's request, up through the campus to the athletic field, arriving about 12:30.
I was very tired, but I pitched my tent in a sunny spot that promised shade soon. Then I retired to this cool building to handle some personal business and, after 2 p.m., take a shower.
The tour held a happy hour and gave closing remarks late in the afternoon, in the cool cafeteria. Then I took the tour's shuttle into town to try to get coffee for the morning, but I struck out. I'll survive.
Tomorrow, the last day of the tour, 33 miles, Dobbs Ferry to Brooklyn. The route goes down the west side of Manhattan, or we can detour to Broadway, closed to traffic for Summer Streets. I'll probably stick to the west side, worried that Summer Streets will be crowded and hard to ride safely.
