Went to the coast to escape smoke and heat. Started from the Nestucca Valley Presbyterian Church in Pacific City. No wind to start and a little elevated smoke, temp in the low 60s. The first 5 miles goes across the Ferry St. bridge and picks up Sandlake Rd. A short, gradual hill then a downhill to the Sandlake Rd and McPhillips Dr intersection. The one-lane signal light was still there. The next 9 miles continued on Sandlake Rd to the Cape Lookout Rd junction. Another 4 miles on Sandlake Rd to Highway 101, with a 1.3 mile steady climb (250 ft gain) to start the segment. Headed south on 101 and made a rest stop at the Beaver Chevron at Blaine Rd (mile 17.5). Traffic on 101 picked up the next 5 miles to Hebo. Several large commercial trucks. Turned onto Highway 22 at Hebo. Not much of a shoulder, but less traffic. The first 7.5 miles on 22 is a very gradual climb (about 250-300 feet gain), followed by a nice downhill to the Dolph junction at Highway 130. The Little Nestucca River segment is always pleasant. This is also the old Reach the Beach route. A few rollers, including The Wall, a short, steep climb (peaking at 14%). Need to use caution on the one-lane bridges. The northwest marine wind started around MP 5. Turned off at Meda Loop Rd and took that to Highway 101. Continued on 101 to the Resort Dr. turn-off. Finished via Resort Dr and Brooten Rd.
