After packing up and departing the BDR we headed to 50,000 Silver Dollar Inn for breakfast. Cream of Wheat (add raisens for .50) and eggs for Jupiter and hashbrowns, toast, bacon and butt nuggets for me. The first 25 miles or so was very slow as it contained a steep gravel climb followed by a steeper, longer, narrow and twisty descent. For sure the most technical downhill of the journey. When we finally emerged from the mountains into the tiny town of Mullan we found a hose to wash off the dirt from our bikes before enjoying some cokes and hot dogs at the fueling station. Immediately after leaving Mullan our route dropped us onto the bike trail on which we’d spend most of the day. Just off the trail we revisited last year’s stop at The Beanery for 1.5 iced mocha’s (each). Once back on the trail it was another 20 miles or so before our exit that would take across the river and onto Coeur D’Alene. Unfortunately when we exited the trail to cross the river we found the bridge we were to cross on was gone, a complete re-do was underway. Another re-route which added about 15 miles or so got us across the next closest crossing, a one-lane bridge off a gravel road. Once back on track we climbed the 4th of July pass (on the I-90 which is the only option) to find WHITNEY waiting for us at the top! It was an awesome surprise and a testament to her patience and determination as she’d climbed an equivalent ascent from the opposite side to get there. So back down the road she’d just climbed we all headed towards our campsite where Harrison awaited with bratwursts, potato salad, fruit, chips & salsa and of course a couple coca-cola’s.
