We opted for a motel room in Missoula as there weren’t any closeby camping options so that’s where the day following our rest day began, just a few blocks from Black Coffee which after talking to the locals was pretty much the best bakery/coffee spot in town. After a chocolate croissant for me and a sweet apricot danish AND a bagel with cream cheese for Jupiter, we began our journey west towards Coeur D’Alene, however our route would only take us about halfway there today. The smoke had returned but it wasn’t bad, nothing a couple of ex-Southern Californian’s couldn’t handle for sure! As we made our trek through the I-90 corridore the route forced us onto I-90 for a few short stretches, never longer than about 5 miles and always with a clean, wide shoulder. At about 2:30pm Jupiter spied a meat processing plant in Superior that had a small sign for a market. Inside we found ice and water (two things you can’t always count on particularly ice), lots of intersting things to look at (see photo) and even some ready made cold brew coffee. Overall the route was pretty chill until we reached the last 14 miles which turns onto a double track dirt/gravel path. The first 2-3 miles of the path were very rocky, bumpy and rather technical but luckily a smoother gravel surface presented itself for the final 11 miles to BDR. Upon arriving at the ranch we discovered the entire property had been rented out for a family reunion. Tracy, the man who had organized the event for his family was super cool and allowed us to pitch our tent near the clubhouse which contained a nice bathroom and shower. It would have been perfect aside from the proximity of I-90 which was so loud it sometimes seemed we were sleeping on the interstate!
